Vietnamese cuisine is a must-try for any traveler visiting tourist spots across Vietnam. Because when you return to Indonesia, it feels difficult to find authentic Vietnamese dishes in Indonesia. Even if there are some, their flavors have likely been adjusted to Indonesian tastes.
Here are some popular Vietnamese dishes that are often mentioned by travelers who have visited Vietnam.
Com rang
Almost throughout Asia, you will find a type of fried rice. Historically, fried rice was first created by the Chinese long ago. It then spread around the world, including Indonesia.
Well, in Vietnam, you will also find a type of fried rice called com rang. The difference is only a few typical Vietnamese vegetables called bia hanoi.
Banh cuon
In Indonesia, you are probably familiar with pastel, martabak, risoles, lumpia, and similar foods. Essentially, these are foods that are wrapped with various fillings, ranging from beef, chicken, carrots, bamboo shoots, or potatoes.
In Vietnam, you will also find a dish called banh cuon. This dish is made from rice flour as its skin. The filling consists of meat and vegetables. It's almost like lumpia. It is usually enjoyed with soy sauce and chili.
Pho
Chicken noodle soup in Indonesia is already familiar, right? From homemade noodles to factory-made ones, they are all available. Some vendors even make their own noodles. Generally, the noodles are made from wheat flour.
In Vietnam, you can find a type of noodle called Pho. The difference is that the noodles are made from rice flour. The presentation is quite unique, usually served with fresh broth, vegetables, and a mix of chicken and meat.
Banh xeo
This dish resembles tacos and kebabs, but it is unique to Vietnam. Banh xeo is commonly found there. The main ingredients are shrimp, chicken, or meat. Interestingly, it also includes bean sprouts.
Cao lau
For those of you who are Muslim and do not eat pork, you will not be able to enjoy this dish. Cao lau is similar to udon. The meat used is usually pork.
Banh bao
Banh bao is a type of Vietnamese bao. The fillings are very varied, including quail eggs, vegetables, and meat. There are also vegetarian banh bao, usually filled only with vegetables without eggs and meat.
Banh khot
A snack that you will find in Vietnam is banh khot. Banh khot is similar to bakwan or what people in Surabaya call ote-ote, but it is made from rice flour. It is also topped with shrimp for decoration. The difference is that banh khot is cooked using a tool similar to a cake mold.
Xoi la dua
In Java, you are probably familiar with lemper. In Vietnam, you will also encounter a dish similar to lemper, called xoi la dua. The difference is that in lemper, the filling is inside, while in xoi la dua, the filling is placed on top (topping). The topping usually consists of sesame and shredded chicken.
Goi cuon
Another popular dish there is goi cuon, Vietnamese spring rolls. The filling usually includes meat, shrimp, and vegetables. There is also a dipping sauce to complement the enjoyment.
Bo luc lac
This dish is quite unique because the meat is steamed first and then cut into cubes. After being cut, it is seasoned with soy sauce and other typical Vietnamese spices. The texture is soft on the tongue.
