Documents Required for Marriage with Foreign Nationals

Marrying a foreign national or WNA is a common occurrence. Especially in this era of globalization, people from all corners of the world are connected to one another. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are many Indonesians who have partners from other countries.
Marrying a WNA will be very different from marrying a fellow Indonesian citizen. In addition to cultural differences, managing documents as a requirement to marry a WNA is also more complicated than marrying an Indonesian citizen.
Although the requirements for marrying a WNA are quite complicated, it turns out that this does not discourage people from marrying a WNA. Moreover, marrying a WNA is a source of pride. The difficult requirements for marrying a WNA that take a long time do not make people feel burdened.
Here are the requirements for marrying a WNA.
Documents Required for WNA
The first letter that must be processed by a WNA who will marry an Indonesian citizen is the CNI or Certificate of No Impediment. CNI is a certificate stating that the WNA is single or does not have a marital status.
To obtain a CNI, the requirements include bringing several documents. The required documents are the original birth certificate, identity card from the country of origin, passport, proof of residence or domicile letter, and a marriage form from the embassy of the WNA's country.
After obtaining the CNI, there are still many more documents that must be completed as requirements to marry a WNA.
The foreign national must prepare the following documents in a form that has been translated into Indonesian by a sworn translator. These documents will be authenticated by the embassy of the WNA's country located in Indonesia.
- Photocopy of passport
- Photocopy of birth certificate
- Photocopy of identity card from the country of origin
- Domicile certificate
- Certificate stating not in a marital status
- Divorce certificate if previously married.
- Death certificate of the spouse if previously married and the spouse has passed away.
- Passport photos 2x3 in 4 copies and 4x6 in 4 copies
- If a convert, must include a conversion certificate.
Documents Required for WNI
When preparing documents as requirements to marry a WNA, it is advisable to duplicate these documents as much as possible. Because the documents submitted to the embassy will not be returned.
The first document that must be processed by the Indonesian partner who will marry the WNA is to create a letter of introduction at the RT/RW level stating that there are no obstacles to conducting the marriage.
Then at the village and sub-district level, forms N1, N2, and N4 will be required. Form N3 is specifically for those marrying at the KUA.
After that, bring a photocopy of the family card, the parents' marriage book if it is the first child.
Don't forget the photocopy of the ID card for two witnesses of the marriage. Passport photos 2x3 in 4 copies and 4x6 in 4 copies. Proof of payment of property tax and a prenuptial agreement if any.
After these documents are complete, you still have to submit several more documents to the foreign embassy. Such as the original birth certificate and photocopy, photocopy of letters N1, N2, N4, and if you have a prenuptial agreement, it can also be submitted.
After that, you will wait for the documents to be checked and will be informed further by the embassy staff.
The requirements for marrying a WNA are made to protect each citizen. Of course, if you really intend to marry a foreign national, no matter how complicated the requirements to marry a WNA are, they will be fulfilled.
