Maritime transportation is a means of transportation that commonly operates in the ocean. Maritime transportation itself has various functions, depending on the type of maritime transportation.

In Indonesia, there are several types of maritime transportation. Some are commonly used for general purposes, while others are only used for specific needs.

Some types of maritime transportation in Indonesia are:

Cargo Ship

As the name suggests, this maritime transportation serves the function of transporting goods. The goods carried by cargo ships are generally export or import items. These goods are usually transported from one port to another.

Passenger Ship

This type of transportation is used to carry passengers. In the past, this mode of transportation was the primary choice for those going on pilgrimage or umrah.

This type of maritime transportation is still used today. In Indonesia, passenger ships are commonly used as an alternative for those who wish to return to their hometowns, especially for those whose hometowns are on different islands. Passenger ships have a large capacity, allowing them to accommodate many passengers.

Ferry

This type of maritime transportation serves a function similar to that of passenger ships. However, ferries have a smaller capacity compared to passenger ships. In addition to passengers, ferries can also transport several land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, and trucks.

Fishing Vessel

This is a maritime transportation commonly used by fishermen to catch fish, especially when they intend to catch fish in large quantities. These ships are equipped with special compartments to store fish that are refrigerated. The refrigeration keeps the catch fresh, even when the ship arrives at the port.

Tugboat

This type of maritime transportation is commonly found in narrow ports. Its function is to tow larger ships when they are about to dock or leave the port.

Rescue Boat

This type is commonly used to assist those who experience disasters at sea, such as passengers involved in a sinking ship incident. These boats are always ready to help, even in the worst weather conditions.

Tanker Ship

This can be considered one of the large-sized maritime transportation types. Its main function is to transport oil. In its operation, tanker ships are controlled by computer systems and satellite-based navigation systems.

Tanker ships come in several types. One of them is the supertanker, which is very large. Supertankers are 378 meters long, 50 meters wide, and have a deadweight of 167,000 tons. With such dimensions, supertankers can carry nearly one million barrels of oil.

Warship

This type of maritime transportation is only used when war is unavoidable. There are several types of warships, one of which is an aircraft carrier. This ship's function is to carry air combat fleets. It requires many tugboats, especially when it is about to dock or leave the port. This is due to its size, which is slightly larger than typical large ships.
