5 Things That Cause Car Smoke to Sting the Eyes

The car combustion system is one of the important aspects that indicates the health of the engine. Usually, you should start to be cautious if there are problems with the combustion system. Issues in the combustion system can also be marked by several symptoms that are visible or can be felt directly.

Car smoke that stings the eyes is one of the symptoms indicating a problem with the combustion system. The issue must be identified further as there are various potential damages. Here are some things to ensure when the car smoke feels stinging in the eyes.

Improper ECU system modification

In cars that adapt injection technology, the electronic control unit (ECU) plays a central role in the combustion system. Therefore, when the fuel and air mixture is not normal, the combustion system will be disrupted and the smoke will feel stinging. There is a possibility that the ECU is damaged, causing the combustion system to be imperfect.

The ECU regulates the air and fuel mixture. In conventional car engines, this setting is usually adjusted for economy or racing. If the fuel setting is too much, the car's power will be high. However, at high RPM, the combustion process of the fuel does not optimally mix with the air.

Problematic spark plugs

The car combustion system can also be disrupted due to the role of malfunctioning spark plugs. Damaged spark plugs can be caused by leftover carbon deposits, spark plugs that are flooded with oil, or simply have been used for too long. Usually, the exhaust function will also be affected, disrupting the combustion system and impacting the smoke emitted.

Decreased engine compression

When it reaches the limit of usage, the piston rings or cylinders in the car will wear out and cause a decrease in engine compression. When this happens, the combustion process can also be disrupted, causing the exhaust smoke to feel stinging in the eyes. To ensure the car's compression is still functioning well, it is advisable to perform compression testing.

Broken fuel injectors

Vehicles with electronic injection systems may not experience this problem because the injector is located outside the fuel chamber. However, cars with diesel engines use injectors directly into the fuel chamber. Diesel injectors must be able to atomize diesel under high compression pressure into the fuel chamber.

When the diesel injector fails to atomize, there is a homogeneity in the fuel mixture that results in engine combustion failure. At that time, the fuel does not burn perfectly, causing the smoke that comes out of the exhaust to sting when it hits the eyes. Usually, this condition is also marked by a rough engine sound.

Oxygen sensor damage

Disruption in the combustion system can also be caused by damage to the oxygen sensor in the exhaust channel. This sensor functions to ensure that the fuel combustion occurs perfectly. For example, when there is unburned fuel content, the sensor will send a signal to reduce the fuel supply to the engine.

However, the engine may continue to operate because the sensor does not detect the presence of unburned fuel perfectly. The oxygen sensor may be damaged, causing the exhaust smoke to feel stinging in the eyes.

Therefore, it is advisable to check the exhaust gas from the exhaust while warming up the engine to ensure there is no damage to the fuel combustion system. If there are problems or unusual symptoms, immediately check with the nearest workshop!
