A recruiter once said that an interview is a process of getting to know each other between the employee and the company. Therefore, the conversation session should be conducted honestly, but just convey what is asked. The time for online interviews is usually limited, this is done to ensure that communication is effective and not verbose.

The online interview questions are the questions that will be asked by the company through an interview invitation via video conference. However, some companies may have already conducted a call interview over the phone. For technical questions in the limited situation of meeting in person, job applicants will be interviewed through an online interview.

Examples of Online Interview Questions

Even if you have done online interviews several times, there may be some questions that sometimes you can't think of the answers to. The online interview questions asked will indeed relate to your routine. However, there is still a feeling of tension when facing the interviewer. Here are examples of questions that are often asked.

1. What do you do in your current job?

This question usually becomes the first question asked after self-introduction at the beginning of the online interview. However, it's fine if you want to explain this directly in the introduction part. Usually, this will make the interview proceed faster and more effectively.

2. What do you know about our company?

Just like choosing a house to buy, you need to know the condition of the company you are applying to very well. If accepted as an employee in that company, most of your time during the day will certainly be spent working. Therefore, you need to introduce what you already know about the company that will eventually be your workplace.

3. Why did you apply for this position?

The next question relates to your reasons for applying for a particular position. If the position you are applying for is the same as your previous job, try to provide an honest answer. Perhaps the reason is that you didn't fit in at your previous workplace, but try to answer without speaking negatively, okay.

4. What makes you feel suitable for the position you applied for?

This is your time to prove your competencies. However, mention competencies and achievements that are well-measured. For example, “I once created a program that successfully increased product sales by 25%. At your company, I am interested in contributing to product improvement because I also use product x and feel its benefits directly.” In addition to mentioning achievements, mention the skills you can offer to the company so that your abilities are valued.

5. What problems have you encountered while working?

Once again, try not to speak negatively about your previous employer. Explaining problems can be told honestly, but also make sure to explain how you handled them well.

6. What salary do you expect?

This question may be the hardest question, especially when you really need a job. On one hand, it feels like you just want to get a job quickly. However, on the other hand, your job competencies still need to be valued appropriately. A realistic answer is usually relevant if it starts with mentioning your current salary.

You can answer, “Currently my take-home pay is Rp5 million, my expectation is maybe an increase of around 20%.” This way, the company understands how much the previous company valued your work competencies in that position. Usually, a realistic salary adjustment is 10 – 20%, also mention if that figure is negotiable.

7. When can you start working?

Some companies require their employees to submit a notice period before resigning. This provision is usually stated in the employment contract and asked by the prospective new company. In some situations, this happens because there are companies looking for a replacement employee as soon as possible.

Those are some online interview questions that are often asked. Also, make sure to use the interview opportunity to ask questions to the prospective company. Good luck with your online interview!
