Apa itu ECM (Engine Control Module) Pada Mobil? Ini Fungsi dan Cara Kerjanya

The development of technology in the automotive field, especially cars, is progressing rapidly. In recent years, cars on the market have been equipped with ECM (Engine Control Module) features. So what is the function of this feature? How does it work in cars? To answer all these questions, let's take a look at the following review.

What is ECM (Engine Control Module) in Cars?

ECM stands for Engine Control Module. The ECM itself is one part of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) of the car. As is known, the latest cars have adopted the EFI (Electric Fuel Injection) system as a replacement for the carburetor system. The EFI system is closely related to the ECU. Because all activities such as ignition timing, engine rotation calculations, fuel mixing, and air-fuel mixing in the EFI system can be controlled through computerized processes via the ECU.

Inside the ECU, there are several components ranging from the ABS Control Module, TCM (Transmission Control Module), BCM (Body Control Module), Airbag Control Module, to ECM (Engine Control Module). Each of these components has different functions.

The ECM can be referred to as a complete engine performance control circuit. In fact, many automotive experts consider the ECM to be the “brain” of modern cars. This is because the ECM can control the performance of the car's engine while also protecting the engine if there are issues. When the car has a problem, the sensors connected to the ECM will send a signal. Then, the ECM will read that signal and deactivate several problematic systems in the car.

Functions of ECM in Cars

The ECM in cars has the following functions:

1. Determines injection duration

The ECM functions to determine the duration of fuel injection during the engine combustion process. This happens because there are many sensors in the ECM that will send accurate information or signals regarding the fuel pressure needs. The ECM also allows the fuel injection system to function automatically.

2. Controls ignition timing

The ECM also functions as a timing controller for ignition in the engine. As is known, the ignition process in the engine cannot be done arbitrarily as it can affect engine performance. With the ECM, fuel can be converted into power with the correct ignition timing.

3. Addresses cold engine

For the car to be started, the engine must not be cold. To achieve this, you need the help of a cold starter in the ECM. This cold starter functions to start the engine so that it can operate even when cold.

4. Stabilizes engine power

When the car is at low RPM, the engine is likely to experience detonation. This occurs due to a decrease in engine power. To prevent this condition, the ECM will maintain and stabilize engine power to remain high even at low RPM.

5. Controls vehicle speed

The ECM also functions as a speed controller for cars with automatic transmission. As you know, automatic transmission cars are not equipped with a clutch feature to control speed. Here, the role of the ECM is needed to replace the function of the clutch so that the vehicle speed can be adjusted automatically.

How ECM (Engine Control Module) Works

The ECM has a simple working mechanism. When several car systems experience problems, for example, the injection system. The sensors in the ECM will send a signal indicating a problem. This signal will then be read by the ECM, and the ECM will work according to the problem that occurs. The ECM can even deactivate the problematic system.

Thus, the review regarding the functions and workings of the ECM that you need to know. Don't forget to perform regular maintenance at the nearest Daihatsu workshop, so that your car's ECM does not have issues.
