What are CKD, CBU, and IKD in Cars? Here are the Differences
CKD car is a term used for imported cars that come with car components but are in a disassembled condition or not yet assembled. In addition to CKD, there are also terms CBU and IKD in the automotive world. So what are the differences? For more details, see the following review.
What are CKD, CBU, and IKD?
Talking about the automotive world, there are certainly many terms that need to be understood, such as the terms CKD, CBU, and IKD. These three terms have different meanings. The complete definitions are as follows.
CKD stands for Completely Knock Down. This term is usually used to identify cars that are imported but in a condition that has not been assembled. The condition of the components in CKD cars is considered complete. These components will later be assembled by the importing country until the car is intact and ready for sale.
CBU stands for Completely Built Up. CBU cars are cars that are imported fully and completely from the country of the car manufacturer, so the importing country does not need to assemble them like CKD cars. Meanwhile, IKD or Incompletely Knocked Down is a term used for importing cars that are not intact or incomplete. Usually, the incomplete components of IKD cars can be produced locally by the importing country.
Differences between CKD, CBU, and IKD
In addition to being viewed from the meaning, these three terms also have other significant differences. The complete differences are as follows.
1. Price
The first difference can be seen from the price aspect. Cars labeled IKD are the cheapest. This can happen because the components of IKD cars can usually be produced locally by the importing country. Meanwhile, the price of CKD cars is considered more expensive than IKD cars because the components in CKD cars cannot be produced locally by the importing country. However, the price of CKD cars is cheaper than CBU cars because CKD cars are assembled in the importing country.
2. Market segment
The second difference can be seen from the market segment. IKD and CKD cars have a larger market segment compared to CBU cars. This is because IKD and CKD cars can adjust to market demand, especially in the domestic market, due to the simpler and cheaper production and assembly processes. Meanwhile, the market segment for CBU is considered limited because CBU cars are imported completely, making their purchase price higher.
3. Maintenance
The third difference can be seen from the maintenance aspect. CKD and IKD cars generally have easier maintenance processes compared to CBU cars. This is because CKD cars are assembled domestically, and IKD components are made domestically. Therefore, CKD and IKD cars are usually produced en masse, making spare parts for these types of cars very easy to find in the market. Meanwhile, CBU cars usually have to go through an ordering process when spare parts for these types of cars are damaged. This happens because CBU cars are produced abroad and imported fully.
4. Performance
The fourth difference can be seen from the performance aspect of the cars. Considering that CKD cars are assembled domestically, and some components of IKD cars are produced domestically, this makes these types of cars have performance that meets market needs in Indonesia. This is because the design of these cars usually must comply with SNI (Indonesian National Standard). Meanwhile, CBU cars have performance that is less suitable for SNI standards or the road contours in Indonesia. This is because CBU cars are made according to international standards.
Thus, the differences between CKD, CBU, and IKD cars that you need to know. To ensure your car's performance is always optimal, make sure to service your car regularly at the official Daihatsu workshop.
