Here is the Difference Between Power Steering and Manual, Must Know!

Inilah Perbedaan Power Steering dengan Manual, Wajib Tahu!

Understanding the difference between power steering and manual steering is essential, especially when buying a car. Each steering system has its own advantages, allowing you to determine which steering system suits you best. Let's directly find out the complete differences by paying attention to the following discussion.

Difference Between Power Steering and Manual

There are several differences you need to understand between the power steering system and the manual steering system. Here are the complete differences.

1. Control Aspect

Ease of controlling the car is an important aspect in distinguishing between power steering and manual steering systems. In terms of control, the power steering system can be said to be superior compared to the manual steering system.

In cars that use power steering, the driver does not have to struggle to turn the steering wheel when making turns at low speeds. For example, when turning on congested urban roads or parking the car.

2. Responsiveness Aspect

In terms of responsiveness, the power steering system is also superior compared to the manual steering system. This is because the power steering system uses hydraulic or electric pressure when in use. As a result, the car's maneuvers become more precise and unobstructed while driving.

In contrast, the manual steering system relies on the driver's strength to determine the level of responsiveness. In situations that require quick maneuvers, using a manual steering system can reduce comfort in driving the car.

3. Steering Wheel Rotation When the Engine is Off

The next difference between the power steering and manual steering systems lies in the ability to turn the steering wheel when the engine is off. In the power steering system, the driver can move the car even when the engine is off. This is very advantageous for the driver when parking in tight spaces or in emergency situations. Meanwhile, in the manual steering system, the driver will find it difficult to move the car when the engine is off, thus needing to start the engine to steer the car.

4. Mechanism Aspect

The next difference lies in the working mechanism. In the working mechanism of the power steering system, the force that is amplified does not only come from the driver's hands. However, the amplified force also comes from the assistance of power steering fluid that is channeled through the pump. In contrast, in the working mechanism of the manual steering system, the force generated purely comes from the driver's hands, which is automatically transmitted to the car's wheels.

5. Durability Aspect

The last difference lies in durability. In fact, the durability of using the power steering system compared to the manual system can be said to be the same. However, in reality, the power steering system is prone to problems and damage. Damage to the power steering system is usually caused by incorrect operation. To keep the power steering well-maintained and durable, you must avoid the following habits.

  • Not turning the steering wheel before the car moves. It is advisable to turn the steering wheel before accelerating when parking the car.
  • Turning the power steering too hard and too far, causing the power steering to break.
  • Using the wrong power steering oil in cars with hydraulic power steering. It is best to choose power steering oil that meets the viscosity standards, such as oil with SAE 30 to SAE 80 codes. Or choose oil with oil leak seal features to prevent oil loss when leaks occur.
  • Frequently parking the car with the steering wheel not straight.
  • Using inappropriate and low-quality power steering parts.
  • Using tires with high friction.

Thus, these are some differences between the power steering and manual steering systems that need to be known. If your car's steering system has problems, don't forget to have it serviced regularly at the nearest Daihatsu workshop.
