Motor vehicles operating in the city of Surabaya use the letter code “L” as the front code of the license plate. However, the back code of the license plate uses different letters based on the Samsat area that issues the vehicle license plate. The back plate codes used are as follows.
1. Back plate code starting with the letters A/B/C/D/E/F
The back plate code A/B/C/D/E/F is used by motor vehicles originating from the East Surabaya area.
2. Back plate code starting with the letters G/H/J/K/L/M
This back plate code is usually issued by the South Surabaya Samsat.
3. Back plate code starting with the letters N/O/P/Q/R/S/T/U
This back plate code is usually issued by the North Surabaya Samsat.
4. Back plate code starting with the letters I/O/U

How to Check Vehicle Tax for Surabaya Plates
For those of you interested in buying a used vehicle from the city of Surabaya, it is advisable to check the vehicle tax status first before purchasing. - Next, visit the official Samsat Indonesia website that you can access at the following link: https://e-samsat.id.
- Once the website page opens, you need to fill in all the columns in the form provided. From the vehicle license plate column, serial number column, to the last five digits of the engine number.
- If you are done, just check the Province column, and select East Java Province.
- Then, click the “Check Now” button, and the website page will display complete information regarding the vehicle's identity, owner, and tax bill.
2. Check via the Jatim Dispenda website (East Java Provincial Revenue Service)
The steps are as follows.
- Open a browser application on your phone or laptop, then visit the Jatim Dispenda website at https://info.dipendajatim.go.id/index.php?page=info_pkb or https://bapenda.jatimprov.go.id/info/pkb.
- Next, fill in the vehicle license plate, the last 5 digits of the chassis number, and the security code in the available columns on the website page.
- Once done, click the “Submit” button and the tax bill will automatically appear.
3. Check via the SIGNAL application
The steps are as follows.
- Download the SIGNAL application and install it.
- Once done, register a SIGNAL account by uploading a selfie, e-KTP, identity, email address, and phone number.
- Then open the application and select the “NRKB” menu.
- Then fill in the vehicle license plate in the available column.
- Then click the “Search” button and the tax bill will appear.
4. Check via SMS
The steps are as follows.
- Open the SMS menu on your phone, then type a message in the format “JATIM” (space) vehicle license plate. Example: L 6919 QZ.
- Finally, send the message to the number 7070.
