What is a Shock Key? Its Functions and Types
Talking about car repair tools, it can be said that they are very diverse. However, there is one important repair tool to know, namely the socket wrench. So what is meant by this wrench? And what are its functions? For more details, let's take a look at the following review.
What Is a Socket Wrench?
As previously explained, a socket wrench is one of the workshop tools used in vehicle repairs, especially cars. This wrench is also known by various names, namely socket wrench. Generally, this wrench consists of several parts, namely the socket, the handle (socket handle), and the extension bar.
The socket part is usually placed on the nut or bolt. This socket part usually has a round, hexagonal, or twelve-sided shape. Meanwhile, the handle part is used as a hand grip to turn the socket part. The extension bar is used to reach nuts or bolts that are difficult to access. In confined spaces, the extension bar is usually used together with a universal joint or t-handle.
Functions of the Socket Wrench
The socket wrench has important functions as follows.
1. Inserting and removing nuts and bolts
The socket wrench plays an important role in inserting and removing nuts and bolts attached to car components. From suspension system components, braking, wheels, to the engine. This will certainly make the car repair process easier and faster.
2. Tightening and loosening nuts and bolts
In addition to being used to insert and remove nuts and bolts, the socket wrench can also be used to tighten and loosen bolts as needed.
3. Facilitating and speeding up the suspension repair process
The socket wrench also functions to facilitate and speed up the suspension repair process. Because this wrench can be used to remove and install suspension components such as springs and shocks, up to the shock absorber.
4. Flexible in work
As previously explained, the socket wrench comes in various shapes, from round, hexagonal to twelve-sided. This makes it very flexible to use on all types of bolts and nuts or objects that are shaped according to the sides of the socket wrench.
Types of Socket Wrenches
In the automotive world, socket wrenches are divided into several types. The complete types are as follows.
1. Based on the shape of the tube
The first type of socket wrench can be seen from the length or shortness of the wrench tube shape. According to its tube shape, socket wrenches are divided into three types: standard socket wrench (short), semi-deep socket wrench (medium length), and deep socket wrench (long/deep). For the process of tightening or loosening nuts and bolts with a large tightening torque, the standard socket wrench is usually used. Meanwhile, for tightening or loosening nuts and bolts with medium tightening torque, the deep socket wrench is usually used.
2. Based on the number of points on the wrench hole
If viewed from the number of points on the wrench hole, socket wrenches are divided into three types as follows.
- 6 pt socket wrench: used for large tightening torque needs.
- 8 pt socket wrench: used for tightening nuts and bolts.
- 12 pt socket wrench: used for shifting small angles.
3. Based on the size of the drive hole (head)
Meanwhile, if viewed from the size of the drive hole, socket wrenches are divided into four types, namely socket wrenches of size 0.6, size 0.9, size 1.3, and size 1.9.
