Understanding Run Flat Tires on Cars and How They Work

Mengenal Run Flat Tires pada Mobil dan Cara Kerjanya

Run Flat Tires (RFT) technology is one of the tire innovations widely applied in luxury cars. RFT has the advantage of being usable even when the tire is under-inflated. For a clearer understanding of this technology, please see the following information.

Definition of Run Flat Tires

In general, RFT or Run Flat Tires are a type of tire that uses specific technology so that it can continue to operate even when it is punctured and loses air pressure. This technology allows drivers to continue driving for a certain distance.

The purpose of using RFT is so that drivers can continue to drive until they find a workshop or a safe place to change the tire. However, the driving speed in such conditions is limited.

How Does RFT Work?

The RFT generally works like any other tire under normal conditions. This means the tire is inflated to the appropriate pressure. However, what distinguishes it is when it is deflated.

When deflated, the driver can still drive at a limited speed for tens of kilometers. This is possible because RFT technology uses a unique strong wall construction that allows it to continue moving even when under-inflated.

With this capability, it is hoped that drivers can continue to drive slowly until they find a tire shop or workshop to address their tire issues. Additionally, drivers can still drive to find a safe place to change the tire.

Advantages of Using RFT Tires

In the previous section, it was discussed that the main function of RFT is to allow the car to keep moving even if the tires are deflated or punctured. However, besides that, there are other specific advantages. Here are the advantages.

1. Reduces the Need for Spare Tires

The first advantage of this technology is that drivers do not need to frequently replace spare tires. This means that when there is a problem with the tire, the driver does not have to change it immediately on-site.

With its capability, the car can travel for tens of kilometers to reach a workshop or safe place. This certainly makes drivers more flexible as they do not have to hassle with changing the tire immediately.

2. Does Not Require a Spare Tire

The ability of the tire to remain usable even when punctured or losing pressure means that car manufacturers no longer include spare tires. This is intended to save weight and space in the vehicle.

3. Maintains Vehicle Performance

RFT technology is indeed designed to keep vehicle performance limited even when experiencing a puncture. This condition allows the driver to continue driving for a certain distance.

Notably, when experiencing a puncture, the car can still be driven for distances of 80 km to 100 km. With that distance, it is very possible to find the nearest car workshop.

4. Reduces the Need for Emergency Services on the Road

The next advantage is that drivers do not have to rely on towing or other emergency services while on the road. As is known, such services are not free and require costs and time.

5. Increased Safety

When a puncture or low air pressure occurs, RFT will help the car to maintain its function and shape. This allows the driver to continue driving safely.

This advantage is certainly very important in emergency situations. Indeed, experiencing a deflation or puncture can increase the risk of accidents due to the vehicle becoming unstable.

That was a complete explanation of Run Flat Tires and how they work. In conclusion, this technology is designed to help drivers continue driving when the tire experiences a puncture or deflation. This allows drivers to search for a shop or workshop without changing their tires.
