Causes of Mosfet Overheating and How to Overcome It

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is a semiconductor device that functions as a signal amplifier and switch in an electronic device. In cars, this MOSFET is usually embedded in the power amplifier section. However, in reality, the MOSFET can heat up at any time. So what causes the MOSFET to heat up quickly? Causes of MOSFET Overheating

As a transistor used in various types of electronic device circuits, the MOSFET automatically receives a very large electric current. The large amount of electric current it receives is what causes the temperature of the MOSFET to fluctuate easily. Sometimes the temperature of the MOSFET becomes so hot that it can reach seventy degrees Celsius. If the temperature of the MOSFET exceeds this maximum temperature, it is certain that the MOSFET will be damaged. As a result, the power amplifier will not function properly, or even shut down.

1. Short Circuit

As is known, the MOSFET is a semiconductor device closely related to the electrical system. Meanwhile, a common problem in electrical systems is short circuits. If a short circuit occurs in the aluminum cooling part with the MOSFET power body, it is certain that the MOSFET will overheat and be damaged.

2. Excess Base Current

When the MOSFET receives too large a base current, the potential for the MOSFET to experience a significant temperature increase is very high. In fact, the MOSFET can burn out and be damaged.

3. Load Not Appropriate

Like other electrical components, the MOSFET also has its own load capacity. If the power received by the MOSFET is too high, the temperature of the MOSFET will easily rise. As a result, the MOSFET will burn out, causing problems with the power amplifier.

4. Power Voltage Too High

The last cause of the MOSFET overheating is due to the power voltage exceeding the MOSFET's voltage capacity.

How to Address Overheating MOSFET

There are several ways you can take to prevent significant temperature increases in the MOSFET. Here are the complete methods.

1. Install a Rib Plate

The first way you can prevent the MOSFET from overheating is by installing a rib plate on the MOSFET. This method is very effective in dissipating heat from the MOSFET.

2. Install a Cooling Plate

The second way is to install a cooling plate on the MOSFET body so that the heat from the MOSFET can be transferred to the cooling plate.

3. Connect the Emitter Leg

To prevent the MOSFET from overheating, you can also connect the emitter leg to the junction capacitor. This way, the power received by the MOSFET will not exceed its capacity to handle power.
