Understanding Powertrain Control Module (PCM) & How It Works

fungsi dan cara kerja powertrain control module

Powertrain Control Module or PCM is one of the components of a car that must be known. Essentially, the PCM is part of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). In this modern era, the technology possessed by motor vehicles has also developed significantly.

One of the developments in this technology is the emergence of injection engines. In cars with this injection technology, the ECU is used.

Indeed, the ECU is not a completely new technology, but it is still used in cars with conventional fuel to this day.

Overview of the Car Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

As the name suggests, the ECU component serves as the main electronic circuit system in vehicles that controls the systems and subsystems of the vehicle in the modern era like today.

Of course, the emergence of unique electronic controls makes vehicle heating more efficient, fuel-efficient, and even has components that can detect malfunctions and adjust ignition performance.

Before the ECU component for fuel mixing existed, the air-fuel mixture and engine speed were done mechanically.

But with the ECU in the injection engine, everything can be done easily using a computer embedded in the data system.

The presence of the ECU in the injection engine also becomes a core component that determines the fuel supply needed in the engine. The computer program will receive a certain amount of data and drive the engine according to the required ratio.

This ECU will also determine the duration of fuel injection in the injector by determining the right time to provide the air-fuel mixture in the engine. Not only that, the ECU also has the function of regulating the performance of the engine cooling fan.

Difference Between ECM and PCM

After getting to know the ECU, the next is the PCM. So what is Powertrain Control Module (PCM)?

Powertrain Control Module or commonly known as PCM is a component that functions as a control unit in vehicles such as cars. Usually, the PCM is a combined control of the ECU and the Transmission Control Module.

Generally, the PCM can control more than 100 systems within the car, and there are hundreds of error codes that may occur. This indicates that some subcomponents of the car are experiencing problems.

If one of those errors occurs, the check engine indicator will usually light up, and the PCM becomes a crucial computerized system, like the brain of the engine control system.

Causes of Powertrain Control Module Damage

As one of the car components, the PCM can certainly experience damage. There are many causes of PCM damage. An important factor affecting the condition of the PCM is the age of the vehicle and the mileage of the car.

Generally, many injection cars over 10 years old experience damage to the PCM, and this damage can be detected quickly. At a minimum, you should know the signs of such damage. Here are various signs, including:

  1. The check engine light is completely off or turns on by itself
  2. The car feels heavier when driven, caused by a decrease in engine power
  3. When driving, you will feel stuttering in the engine
  4. Fuel consumption appears to be more wasteful, even though the distance traveled is not that far.

It turns out that the Powertrain Control Module is an important component, right? Besides knowing the components and signs of damage, you should perform this maintenance regularly.

To maximize maintenance on the PCM, you can service it at an official workshop or the nearest Daihatsu dealer. Supported by experienced mechanics, all components of your car will receive proper handling. You can also book service online, so you don't have to wait too long for service.
