No Need to Go to the Workshop, Here’s How to Check Your Fuel Injection Coil Yourself

The coil or ignition coil is a component designed as an electrical amplifier in a car's electrical system. Like most car components, it is at risk of damage.

Ignition coil also has the risk of wear and damage that affects engine performance. To prevent the car from not starting, let's take a look at how to check the fuel injection coil.

How to Check the Ignition Coil

There is a significant difference between the ignition coil systems of older cars and newer models. In older cars, the ignition coil uses a distributor that connects to all components.

So if the coil distributor is damaged, it will greatly affect the car, causing the cylinder or piston to be disrupted and the engine cannot start. However, in the latest cars, the ignition coil system has used DIS or distributorless ignition system

Where each cylinder in the car is served by one ignition coil, meaning that if one coil fails, it will not cause the car to stall completely. It may only cause one part to limp, and the check engine light will turn on.

Checking the fuel injection coil that has an OBD socket will be even easier, where damage to the coil will produce a unique code, namely a cross code.

For example, like the DTC code Po3oX, where the X indicates that there is a coil that has failed in the cylinder, and if the X contains the number 1, then cylinder number 1 is experiencing a problem.

However, the various codes that appear cannot indicate what problem is occurring with the coil. Problems with the coil itself are very diverse, ranging from ignition system issues to engine compression leaks.

To find out, you need to check the problematic cylinder. Check the restrictor on the primary and secondary coils from the coil's side.

If after checking the fuel injection coil points to a problem with the ignition system component, but the spark plugs and their wires are still in good condition. Then the problem is most likely with the injector.

So you can check the injector restrictor and its voltage to find the source of the problem.

How to Repair the Ignition Coil

When checking the ignition coil, there are several steps you need to follow.

1. Prepare the Tools

First, prepare the tools to check the spark plug coil, such as a socket wrench, adjustable wrench, open-end wrench, and special spark plugs for fuel injection cars. In addition to the tools, also bring someone to help you check the car's spark plug coil.

2. Disconnect the Injector Cables

Open the car hood and disconnect all the injector cables. This is useful to prevent fuel spray from the car, which can occur when checking the fuel injection coil. Then remove the spark plug coil without its cable, and install the special spark plug you have prepared, then start the car.

3. Try to Start Again

If after starting, the spark plug tip emits a spark, then the coil is still in normal condition and vice versa. If no spark appears, then your car's coil needs to be replaced.

4. Replace If Not Igniting

If it does not ignite, then you must replace it with a new one because it is indeed damaged or has aged. Considering that the spark plug coil is an important component in the power source to start the vehicle, do not underestimate it!
