10 Types of Mechanical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions
Mechanical measuring tools are tools used to measure the dimensions of an object. This includes the length, width, depth, and diameter of the object. It is called mechanical because this measuring tool is used without any external power assistance.
These measuring tools are very diverse, but not all of them are used in the automotive field. So, what tools are used? For more details, find out the various types of mechanical measuring tools below along with their functions.
Types of Mechanical Measuring Tools and Their Functions
There are quite a few mechanical measuring tools. However, if you use them for the automotive field, not all of them are utilized.
This is because the automotive field only requires measuring tools that can help address the wear of vehicle components. Here are some mechanical measuring tools used in the automotive field.
1. Vernier Caliper
The Vernier Caliper is used to measure the thickness and width of an object. You can even measure the inner diameter, outer diameter, and depth of an object accurately.
The reading method of this tool is similar to that of a ruler. However, this tool is more precise and detailed compared to a ruler. The precision level of this tool is divided into three starting from 0.02mm, 0.05mm, to 0.1 mm.

2. Torque Wrench
For those of you who enjoy tinkering with vehicles, you are certainly familiar with the torque wrench. This tool is used to measure how tight a nut or bolt is. With this tool, you can tighten bolts or nuts more safely so that the nuts and bolts do not break.
3. Feeler Gauge
The Feeler Gauge consists of 10 thin blades with various thicknesses. This measuring tool functions for clearance (the action of determining the thickness of a vehicle machine's equipment).
In addition, the feeler gauge can also be used to check whether a component is worn out or not. This tool is usually used to measure valve gaps, spark plug gaps, and transmission components.
4. DTI (Dial Test Indicator)
This tool is shaped like a compass and functions as a measuring tool for the curvature of a disc or component shaft. Additionally, the piston rise process can be measured with this tool. For its precision, this tool can measure up to 0.01mm and is very precise.
5. Cylinder Bore Gauge
This tool is a combination of several measuring tools such as replacement water, replacement rod, and DTI. The main function of this tool is to determine the wear condition, cylinder hole, roundness, and cylinder stability. Usually, before you perform boring (oversize), the piston is measured with this tool first.

6. Inside Caliper
This tool is used to measure the internal dimensions and inner diameter of an object. This tool can determine whether the inner surface of an object is aligned or not.
7. Outside Caliper
While the inside caliper functions to measure the internal dimensions and diameter of an object, this tool functions in the opposite way. This tool is used to measure the outer diameter and dimensions of an object.
8. Inside Micrometer
The function of this tool is as a measuring tool for the internal dimensions of an object such as a hole or the inner diameter of a tube. For its precision level, this tool can reach 0.01mm to 0.001mm. This tool also consists of several components such as spindle, spacer, spindle lock screw, and thimble sleeve.
9. Outside Micrometer
This tool is used to measure the external dimensions of an object. Its precision level is the same as the inside micrometer and better than the vernier caliper. This tool consists of other components such as thimble, ratchet knob, spindle, anvil, sleeve, and frame.

10. Protractor
This tool is shaped like a half-circle and is equipped with a long straight metal. Its function is to measure the angle of an object up to 180 degrees.
Thus, these are some mechanical measuring tools used in the automotive field. Hopefully, this review helps you when measuring vehicle components.
