The main function of fuses in cars is crucial, especially in the car's electrical system. This component is responsible for preventing the risk of damage to the components within the car's electrical system, especially during short circuits.

Although fuses have an important function, not everyone understands this component in depth. To help you understand it better, pay attention to the review regarding the types of fuses, their functions, and how they work.

Function of Fuses in Cars

As explained earlier, car fuses play an important role in the car's electrical system, especially regarding safety.

Here are some main functions of car fuses:

  1. Disconnect the electrical current when the car's electrical system experiences a short circuit, whether caused by excess current or other factors.
  2. A component that serves to protect the car's electrical system so that all components within it are always safe.
  3. Prevent the risk of fire in the car's electrical system when a short circuit occurs.

Types of Car Fuses

In cars, fuses are divided into several types, and each type has an influence on the function it provides. To satisfy your curiosity, pay attention to the following types of car fuses.

1. Glass Cartridge

This type of fuse has a shape like a tube with metal ends and a transparent glass wall. At the end of the fuse, there is a current load and a special fuse code that serves as information when replacing the fuse. This type of fuse is often used in older cars because it is claimed to be more durable and long-lasting.

2. Blade

This type of fuse resembles a phone charger head, with a plastic body and metal ends. The body of this fuse comes in various colors that serve as indicators of the required electrical current capacity.

This type of fuse is usually used in newer model cars. The way to use it is the same as when you are charging your phone.

3. Stone Model

This type of fuse is shaped like a tube similar to the glass cartridge type. However, this type does not have a transparent glass wall and is made of plastic. You can find this type of fuse in luxury cars made in Europe, such as BMW and Mercedes Benz.

4. Fusible Link Model

This type of fuse has a unique shape resembling a cable with metal strips. The two metal strips are soldered together so that when a short circuit occurs, that part melts quickly.

This unique shape is intentionally designed to minimize the risk of damage to components in the car's electrical system during a short circuit.

5. Yazaki Model

The fusible link model is the precursor to the creation of the Yazaki or BFT (Battery Fuse Terminal) type fuse. In this type of fuse, the design is considered more perfect. This design is intended to better protect the car battery.

How Car Fuses Work

After you understand the functions and types of car fuses, you need to know how they work. Here is how car fuses work that you need to know.

The voltage of the electrical current in the car's electrical system depends on the generation of the car used. Older cars usually have an electrical current voltage of 6 Volts. Meanwhile, newer cars have an electrical current voltage of 12-24 Volts.

The placement of fuses in cars is grouped based on their circuits, such as the ignition system circuit, car light circuit, and so on.

Fuses work like automatic sensors in cars. If the electrical current load is problematic or too high, the fuse will automatically cut off that current. As a result, the electrical components in the car will not be damaged or burned.

Given the crucial function of fuses, you need to check this component regularly. To keep your car's performance optimal, perform comprehensive car maintenance at the nearest Daihatsu dealer.
