4 Causes of Power Steering Becoming Heavy

1. Low or Decreased Power Steering Fluid

You should know that the power steering fluid functions to provide pressure to the piston part within the rack and pinion component. The power steering will function properly if it receives fluid pressure from the piston in the rack and pinion. 

The power steering fluid will decrease over time as the vehicle is used. The reduced fluid level will lower the power generated for the piston component. 

If this happens, the steering will feel heavy when the car is in use. The power steering fluid is usually red; if you find that the fluid has changed color to dark, then you should immediately replace it at a service center.

In addition to the decreased fluid, another cause of heavy power steering is a leak. A leak in the power steering fluid also contributes to the heaviness of the power steering in the car.

2. Damaged Steering Rack Components

The steering rack is part of the rack and pinion components in the car's engine. You should know that this part is the core of the car's steering that works together with the power steering system. 

Using the vehicle for a long time can cause the steering rack to become damaged or worn. If it is in such a condition, the steering will feel heavy and stiff.

When the car first becomes difficult to steer, it is possible that there is damage to the steering rack. However, this condition will disappear on its own once the cause of the heavy power steering due to the damaged rack has been repaired.
