Based on their type, car engines can be divided into two, namely gasoline engines and diesel engines. Both have the same number of working stages. The working steps of both engines start with intake, compression, power/work, and end with exhaust. However, each engine has its own characteristics.

What are the differences in characteristics between gasoline engines and diesel engines? Then, what are the disadvantages and advantages of each engine? Well, read carefully, okay! A gasoline engine is the source of power for a motor. To operate, generators also use gasoline. Gasoline engines are commonly used in two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. Small cars usually use this engine.

The characteristic of a gasoline engine that we can easily recognize is the fuel used by this engine. Gasoline engines use gasoline fuel, such as Premium and Pertamax. Therefore, in English, this engine is called gasoline engine.

In the combustion process, gasoline engines require an ignition component. In addition, the compression ratio required is also relatively low, between 8:1 to 12:1. The acceleration that you can get from a gasoline engine is also unquestionable. Gasoline engines can produce a very smooth sound.

Moreover, the maximum power of gasoline engines is very high. This engine can operate at high rpm.

Characteristics of Diesel Engines

Rudolf Diesel, a German scientist, invented this engine in 1893. Initially, diesel engines were used by large vehicles such as trucks. However, recently, many personal cars have started using diesel engines.

Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines use diesel fuel such as Solar and Biosolar. Diesel engines are also referred to as diesel engine in English.

Diesel engines do not require ignition during the combustion process. Meanwhile, their compression ratio tends to be high, between 15:1 to 22:1. Diesel engines are not suitable for operation at high rpm.

In addition, the acceleration of diesel engines is relatively weak. The sound produced by diesel engines tends to be rough.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Gasoline engines and diesel engines each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Gasoline engines, as discussed, can operate at high rpm. The sound produced is also smoother.

In addition, the weight of the engine is lighter, the cost of overhaul is also relatively cheap, and the smoke emitted appears cleaner even though it contains toxins.

However, gasoline engines are relatively more wasteful than diesel engines. Gasoline engines are also not suitable for carrying heavy loads due to their low torque capacity. Moreover, you need to perform regular checks on the ignition components found in gasoline engines.

On the other hand, diesel engines can carry heavy loads and are stronger on inclines. Diesel engines are also sturdier than gasoline engines. Their usage is also more economical. Diesel engines do not have ignition components, which reduces your list of parts to check.

Additionally, the smoke emitted by diesel engines is relatively dark, but not as toxic as that from gasoline engines. Another advantage is the durability of diesel engines against water accumulation.

However, diesel engines will produce a rougher sound than gasoline engines. Their acceleration is also relatively slow compared to gasoline engines. This affects the maximum power, which is lower. Furthermore, diesel engines are not suitable for operation at high rpm.

Well, based on the explanation above, now you know the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of gasoline and diesel engines. Both have their respective advantages that should be adjusted to your car's needs.

For those of you who pursue speed or acceleration, of course, gasoline engines are more suitable to use. However, for those of you who use cars to carry heavy loads, to be sturdy on inclines, or for off-road activities, diesel engines are definitely the engines that should not be doubted.

So, do you choose a gasoline engine or a diesel engine?
