Before Buying a New Car, Know the Difference Between These 4 Types of Cars

In the past, we only knew four types of cars, namely sedan, jeep, minibus, and pickup, where all four were designed according to their respective functions. Now, car types have developed significantly.

The development of cars today is quite rapid with the support of technology that makes it easier for us to control vehicles. This revolution makes it easier for manufacturers to create cars that meet consumer desires. 
Some consumers need a car as tough as a Jeep but with the appearance of a sedan. There are also those who need a minibus but must be able to be used as a pickup to support their business. 

Understanding Car Types

Various types of cars have emerged, and new terms have appeared to name these types or categories of cars. Some of them include SUV, MPV, Hatchback, and the relatively new City Car. What do these terms mean and what are the differences?

1. SUV

Also known as Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). This type of car is capable of traversing various terrains, both off-road and on-road, while carrying loads of goods or passengers. Essentially, this type of car is required to be tough enough to overcome all kinds of terrain. Its trunk capacity is quite spacious and can accommodate a considerable number of passengers, 7-8 passengers. One other advantage is that it is comfortable to drive.

It may be like a combination of Jeep, Pickup, and Sedan. Its design features a high ground clearance (the distance from the car body to the ground), complete features, sturdy yet soft suspension, a tough and elegant exterior-interior, large tire and body sizes, and a powerful engine to facilitate this car's ability to traverse all terrains.

2. MPV

Also known as Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), where its main function is to transport many passengers or in Indonesia can be referred to as a family car. The advantage of this car is its larger size compared to a sedan. In addition, it has a capacity of 7 seats and also has many places to store small items. Its name, Multi, also indicates that it can be used to carry goods by folding some unused seats.

3. City Car

If translated, it means urban car. Yes, as the name suggests, this car is only suitable for use in traffic and terrains found within the city.  This type of car is mostly small cars that are suitable for use in congested traffic conditions, requiring the car to move nimbly while being fuel-efficient.  City Cars can also be taken for long trips outside the city. However, since they are not designed for that, passengers usually feel sore from sitting too long, and the engine tends to heat up quickly. 

4. Hatchback

This type of car is based on a sedan but with a shorter rear section. A simple description is that a Hatchback is a sedan without a tail. This type is usually used by cars today to streamline the design while remaining functional. Its trunk door is designed to open upwards, making it easier to load items into the trunk.  However, sometimes this type of car has minimal trunk space but can still become larger by folding the back seats.
