Apa itu Drain Plug? Ini Fungsi dan Cara Merawatnya

Understanding the function of the drain plug and how to maintain it properly can keep your car in optimal condition. Although this is very important, the fact is that not all car owners understand what a drain plug is. Let alone its function and how to maintain it? To help you better understand this important component, let's take a closer look at the complete discussion below.

What is a Drain Plug?

A drain plug is a car component that takes the form of a bolt or screw. This component is usually located in the transmission, the bottom of the engine oil pan, and other power sources in the car. For some people, the drain plug is considered a sealing cap that is located between the bolt and the oil drain hole. Therefore, the drain plug is often referred to as a washer drain or oil drain plug gasket.

Function of the Drain Plug

The drain plug has a primary function, which is to release fluids from the car. This includes coolant and engine oil. Here is a more detailed discussion of its functions.

1. Releasing Engine Oil

The drain plug functions to release oil from the engine, especially oil that has thickened or oil that has not been changed for a long time. The contaminated oil will be disposed of when you perform regular oil changes at the workshop.

2. Releasing Transmission Oil

In addition to engine oil, the drain plug is also useful for releasing transmission oil during the transmission fluid replacement process. This way, the wear and tear on the car's transmission can be extended.

3. Releasing Coolant

Additionally, the drain plug also facilitates the process of draining coolant from the car's cooling system during regular servicing.

4. Cleaning the Engine Oil Pan

The drain plug also has another function, which is to clean dirt and sludge that accumulates on the engine oil pan. This dirt will be easily removed when you open the drain plug.

How to Properly Maintain a Drain Plug

Although small in size, the drain plug has a very important function. Therefore, you need to take good care of it. Here are the maintenance tips.

1. Regularly Check and Clean the Drain Plug

To prevent the drain plug from getting damaged easily, you need to regularly check its condition. If the drain plug is dirty, you can clean it immediately. Use a clean cloth to wipe it and remember to scrub gently until it is clean.

2. Tighten the Drain Plug Carefully

To prevent the drain plug from wearing out quickly, you need to pay attention to the torque (strength) when tightening it. Make sure you do not tighten it too much as it can damage the threads of the drain plug when you need to open it again. Also, ensure it is not too loose to avoid leaks.

3. Regularly and Periodically Replace the Seal

As you know, the drain plug has a rubber seal to prevent fluid leaks. This rubber seal has an expiration date as time goes by. The rubber can harden and become brittle. Therefore, you need to replace the rubber seal regularly and periodically according to the manufacturer's manual.

4. Use the Right Grease

To keep the drain plug in good condition, you need to coat it with grease (a special lubricant for drain plugs). Make sure the grease you use is an original and quality product so that the drain plug can be easily opened.

5. Pay Attention to Oil Change Frequency

Regular oil changes not only optimize engine performance but also extend the lifespan of the drain plug. Why is that? Because regular oil changes can reduce dirt contamination in the engine and drain plug.

If these methods do not resolve the damage to the drain plug, it is advisable to replace it at a Daihatsu workshop. At this workshop, you will receive service from the best mechanics and the spare parts used are guaranteed to be original.
