Parallel parking is a method of parking a car where a driver is required to place the car parallel to the road.

Speaking of car parking, there are several techniques that you need to master, both series and parallel. However, this time we will discuss the parallel type.

This type of parking is often considered difficult, especially for beginners. Although nowadays there are many car manufacturers that provide parking camera features and sensors to make it easier for car users.

However, as a driver, you must be aware and attentive when you want to perform the parking technique. So how do you properly parallel park? Check out some tips below.

Overview of Parallel Parking

There are 2 types of car parking, namely series and parallel parking. However, this time we will provide a complete discussion about parallel parking.

What is meant by parallel parking?

Parallel parking is a type of parking used in parking spaces that do not have a large area. You can usually find it in roadside parking or mall parking. Thus, cars must line up to be able to stop while providing enough access to other drivers.

Parallel parking is usually done by automatic cars, but it is not uncommon for manual cars to use this technique as well.

Correct Tips for Parallel Parking a Car

Here are parallel parking tips that you can pay attention to before parking:

1. Align the Position of the Car

The first step in parallel parking is to position your car parallel or straight with the other parked cars.

Make sure the distance between your car and the other car is about half a meter to avoid wasting parking space.

After that, shift the gear lever to position R or reverse and immediately turn the steering wheel to the left until it stops.

2. Ensure the Car Forms a 45-Degree Angle When Reversing

The next step is to slowly reverse your car until it forms a 45-degree angle. So how do you know that the car has reversed to form a 45-degree angle correctly?

Well, you can pay attention to the left side mirror of your car while reversing. Reverse slowly until the middle and back of the car are clearly visible from the car's side mirror.

3. Straighten the Steering Wheel

Another way you can use to determine whether the car has formed a 45-degree angle correctly is by using the rear camera feature of the car located on the head unit.

Activate the camera feature, monitor your car's movement, and when the position is right, you can immediately turn the steering wheel and slowly reverse your car until the wheels are straight.

4. Pay Attention to the Front and Back of the Car

When you have reversed the car straight back at a 45-degree angle, it's time to pay attention to the front and back of your car, whether it is aligned with the back of the other car that is already parked in front of your car.

5. Turn the Steering Wheel Fully to the Left

When your car is aligned with the other car parked in front of it, that means you should immediately turn the steering wheel of your car fully to the left.

Then, slowly reverse your car until all parts of the car body enter the provided parallel parking area. Make sure you always pay attention to the side mirror while reversing the car.

6. Straighten the Front Wheels

The last step is to straighten the front wheels. When all parts of the car are aligned with the other car parked in front of it, it's time to adjust the steering position to straighten the wheel position.

If the car position is still not quite right, turn the steering wheel slightly to the right, then move the car forward and turn the steering wheel to the left and slowly reverse until the car is straight and aligned. Then the car is parked neatly.
