Apa Itu Power Steering Pada Mobil? Ini Fungsi dan Jenisnya!

Power steering is a system in cars that helps drivers control the steering wheel more easily, especially when turning or maneuvering at low speeds. With power steering, drivers do not need to exert much effort to turn the steering wheel, which directly enhances driving comfort and safety.

What is Power Steering?

Power steering is a system that works with the assistance of hydraulic, electric, or a combination of both to reduce the driver's effort when moving the steering wheel. This technology has become standard in most modern cars due to its advantages in enhancing comfort and safety.

Power steering has 6 important components, and to see what these components are, you can check the discussion here.

Main Functions of Power Steering in Cars

After understanding what power steering is, let's look at its functions:

  1. Ease of Control: Helps drivers control the vehicle more easily, especially when parking and maneuvering.
  2. Oil Reserve (Only for Hydraulic): Stores oil to lubricate and operate the hydraulic power steering system.
  3. Lightens Steering Movement: Provides additional power for steering movement to make it more comfortable to use.
  4. Reduces Load on Tires: Reduces the load that the front tires have to bear, especially when driving at low speeds.
  5. Balances Control at Various Speeds: Keeps the steering light at low speeds and stable at high speeds.

Types of Power Steering and How They Work

In Indonesia, power steering comes in several variants, namely Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS), Electric Power Steering (EPS), and Hybrid Power Steering (HPS-EPS). Here are the details:

Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS)

HPS works by utilizing pressure from hydraulic fluid. Here is how it works:

  • How HPS Power Steering Works: This hydraulic system takes power from the engine through a V-belt that drives the vane pump. The pressure of the hydraulic fluid then moves the piston in the power steering system, making the steering lighter.
  • Safety with Relief Valve: At high speeds, the relief valve reduces pressure so that the steering feels heavier, maintaining stability when driving fast.

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

EPS uses an electric motor powered by the car's battery to provide assistance to the steering.

  • How It Works: Angle sensors in the steering column detect steering movement and send signals to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). The ECU adjusts the power of the EPS motor based on needs, allowing the driver to easily turn the steering wheel.
  • Advantages: The EPS system is more efficient because it does not rely on engine power, making it more fuel-efficient.

Hybrid Power Steering

Hybrid Power Steering combines the advantages of both systems above by using a hydraulic pump driven by an electric motor.

  • How It Works: This system has a hydraulic pump driven by an electric motor, combining electrical efficiency with additional power from hydraulics. When needed, the electric motor activates the hydraulic system to assist the steering.
  • Advantages: Provides significant hydraulic power with energy efficiency from EPS, making it suitable for vehicles that require quick response without sacrificing fuel consumption.

Benefits of Power Steering

Power steering provides significant benefits in driving comfort and safety, such as:

  • Ease of Use: Reduces the effort needed to turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds.
  • Reduces Driver Fatigue: Makes it easier to control the car, especially during repeated maneuvers or long trips.
  • Energy Efficiency (EPS and Hybrid): Using an electric motor makes it more energy-efficient and helps reduce fuel consumption, especially in EPS and Hybrid systems.

Power steering, with its various types, offers more comfort for drivers, making the driving experience easier and safer. The use of technologies such as EPS and Hybrid Power Steering can even enhance efficiency and reliability, making it an essential component in modern cars.
