Is It Allowed to Use Variation License Plates? 

There are several ways to beautify a car's appearance, one of which is by varying the license plate. So, are these variation plates allowed? Regarding vehicle plate variations, it actually depends on how you modify or vary them. 

Vehicle License Plate Variations That Are Not Allowed 

According to the Law Number 22 of 2009, modifying or varying vehicle license plates is prohibited. In this legislation, car owners are prohibited from changing the shape, color, text, or attaching stickers and logos. 

Here are some examples of vehicle license plate variations that are prohibited by the police.

1. Variating letters or numbers by shifting them backward to form words or names.
2. Variating letters by changing them into digital letter forms.
3. Variating letters or numbers on the vehicle license plate so that they appear embossed or italicized.
4. Variating by attaching unofficial agency stickers or unit symbols to the license plate.
5. Variating the license plate by changing its size to be too small or too large.
6. Variating the license plate by camouflaging the color of the numbers and letters so that they are difficult to read.
7. Variating the license plate by covering it with mica plastic, thus changing the color of the plate.

Vehicle License Plate Variations That Are Allowed 

So, are there no rules that allow variations on vehicle license plates at all? The answer is certainly yes. According to Article 36 paragraph 8 of Police Regulation Number 5 of 2012 regarding the Registration and Identification of Motor Vehicles, there are several options for variations or changes to license plates that are permitted. Here are the variations of license plates allowed by the police.

1. Variating the license plate by adding light accents. For example, installing LED lights around the license plate so that the vehicle plate lights up when in dark places or at night.
2. Variating the license plate by providing a frame accompanied by clear acrylic glass. This is allowed because it does not change the shape or color of the plate.
3. Repainting the vehicle license plate, provided that the color used is the same as the base color of the license plate.
4. Installing stickers as a cover for the font or shape of the letters and numbers on the plate, provided that it does not change the shape of those letters or numbers.
5. Variating by changing the series of numbers on the license plate to beautiful numbers. When you make this variation, you must pay attention to the following requirements:

• • The chosen letters must be at least 1 letter with a maximum limit of 7 letters. The choice of letters must correspond to personal identity.
  • The series of numbers after the chosen letters can be changed by a minimum of 1 to 3 numbers.
  • The combination of chosen numbers and letters is placed after the vehicle's regional code.
  • The change to the beautiful license plate must be officially registered with Samsat.
