Danger of Engine Damage, This is the Right Time to Change Your Car's Oil Filter

Oil filters are an equally important component of car oil. Essentially, the oil filter functions as a dirt filter that will enter the car engine, thus making its performance much more durable.

The dirt referred to comes from both outside and inside the engine. For example, chemical reactions resulting from the friction of engine movement that produce fine metal. Therefore, when the engine oil is sucked by the oil pump and then goes to the engine components, it must first pass through the oil filter. This is where the filtration system works.

This method is the most effective in filtering dirt and ensuring that only clean oil circulates within the engine. However, over time and usage, dirt in the filter will accumulate and hinder oil circulation.

It is very difficult to determine whether the oil filter is still suitable for use or not. Moreover, the accumulated dirt is also quite difficult to detect, so it is recommended to replace the oil filter periodically before oil circulation blockage occurs.

The oil filter is also considered a car component that is not meant to be cleaned. For example, cleaning the filter with a cloth or air spray. It should be noted that using the oil filter multiple times will be detrimental to the car owner themselves.

This happens because an oil filter that is never replaced can make the performance of the oil filter suboptimal. For instance, if the filtering capacity of the filter was originally 10, because it was not replaced, its value is only 5, of course, the dirt filtering is not optimal.

A common question is when is the right time to replace the car oil filter? There are several assumptions that the oil filter should be replaced every 10,000 kilometers or every time the oil is changed, which is more accurate?

According to machine technician experts, it is recommended to replace the oil filter every time the car's oil is changed. This is because if the oil is changed but the filter is not replaced, then a quarter of the oil and dirt that settles in the filter will not be discarded.

As a result, the new engine oil will mix with the old oil in the filter, which then enters the car engine through the oil circulation explained earlier. Ultimately, the function of the oil that protects engine friction becomes suboptimal due to the mixture of dirty oil from the filter.

Considering the price of oil filters is not too expensive, it is very risky to let clean engine oil become contaminated with dirty oil. The risk of a clogged filter causing engine damage is not worth the price of a new oil filter.

Tips for choosing a car oil filter

What should be considered when choosing a good oil filter? Of course, the easiest way is to simply match the part number and specifications for the car. In addition, there are 4 points that you need to know when choosing an oil filter for your beloved car. Here’s the explanation.

1. Pay attention to the thread and size

The first thing to consider is the thread and diameter size. Usually, oil filters are cylindrical with a diameter of 8 cm and a length of 10-15 cm. Its shape is similar to canned food. Adjust the size of the oil filter so that it is not too big or too small. If forced, it may trigger leaks and damage other components.

2. There is a by-pass valve

The function of the by-pass valve is as an alternative path for oil to flow when a blockage occurs.

3. Has a non-return valve

Make sure the oil filter has a non-return valve. Its function is to see the position of the oil filter attachment to the engine. If it is not equipped with a non-return valve, when the engine is off, the oil in the filter can flow back to the oil reservoir or sump, which can cause the car engine to quickly deteriorate. The non-return valve itself consists of a rubber ring with a disc-shaped steel ring.

4. Consider not choosing a fake oil filter

Although the price is affordable, do not be tempted by cheap prices. Because using counterfeit products can certainly harm the car owner. One of the most important aspects is the dirt filtering capacity of counterfeit goods, which is certainly not as good as genuine oil filters.
