What is the Safe Distance Between Cars During Rain
The safe distance between cars during rain should be at least 4 seconds behind the vehicle in front, double the safe distance on dry roads.
When it rains, the road becomes slippery and visibility is limited. Many rear-end collisions occur not because drivers are careless, but because the distance to the car in front is too short to stop in time.
Defensive driving practitioners recommend a range of 4 to 6 seconds during rain or reduced visibility. Other instructors suggest that the normal 2-second distance should be doubled in the rain, as braking requires longer space.
- Clear weather: 2 to 3 seconds
- Light to moderate rain: at least 4 seconds
- Heavy rain, short visibility, or flooded roads: 5 to 6 seconds or more
The Ministry of Transportation publishes guidelines for minimum and safe distances based on vehicle speed (Kemenhub 151). The minimum distance is the closest limit that should not be crossed, while the safe distance is the most recommended distance.

This table is a basic reference for normal conditions. The Kemenhub Highway Code reminds drivers to increase the distance from the vehicle in front during rain. The safe distance in the table is approximately equivalent to 3.6 seconds at any speed (for example, 60 meters at 60 km/h). In the rain, extend it to 4 seconds or more, and 5 to 6 seconds during heavy rain.
How to Calculate Safe Distance Using the Second Counting Method
The second counting method adjusts the distance according to speed automatically: the faster the car goes, the greater the distance created. Here's how:
- Choose a fixed reference point on the side of the road, such as a utility pole, sign, or bridge.
- Watch as the back of the car in front passes that point.
- Start counting: "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one thousand four."
- Stop counting when your car reaches the same point.
- When it rains, you should only reach that point after the fourth count or more. If you reach it before the count is finished, your distance is still too close.
If too close, gently release the gas and allow the distance to widen. Do not brake suddenly just to correct the distance.
Estimated distance in meters
Rough calculation (speed × seconds, 1 km/h ≈ 0.278 m/second). Tire, brake, and road surface conditions can make the actual stopping distance different.
