How to Reduce Exhaust Emissions

Exhaust gas emissions are the residual products of fuel combustion in motor vehicles that are released through the engine's exhaust system. Exhaust gas emissions are very dangerous to our health, as they contain harmful substances such as: CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), NO (nitrogen oxides), and HC (hydrocarbons).
Moreover, the number of motor vehicles in urban areas is currently very high and continues to increase every year. It seems impossible to reduce the number of vehicles. What we can do is reduce the exhaust gas emissions of our own vehicles. Here are some easy ways to reduce exhaust gas emissions that you can implement.
Use Fuel According to Engine Type
The first way to reduce exhaust gas emissions is by using fuel that is suitable for the engine type. You are probably familiar with the term Research Octane Number (RON). In Indonesia, there are several RONs, namely: 88, 90, 92, and 95.
Every manufacturer has provided information that the car engine is best suited to use fuel with a specific RON. If you do not use the appropriate fuel, it can lead to a lot of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.
Do Not Change Fuel Types Frequently
In addition to being advised to use fuel that matches the engine type, you should also avoid frequently changing fuel types. Changing fuel types will affect the stability of pressure in the engine. This habit can actually lead to increased fuel consumption. If fuel consumption is high, it means that a lot of exhaust gas is also being emitted.
Regularly Check the Combustion System
Vehicles require maintenance, especially if you use them frequently. Perform regular checks, especially on the combustion system. Older cars usually have several components that start to wear out, making the combustion system less optimal. As a result, fuel consumption becomes more wasteful than before.
In addition to regular checks, a bad habit to leave behind is allowing the fuel tank to get close to empty. Such a condition will allow air to enter the injection pump. This can lead to poor combustion quality.
Check Tire Pressure
You might be wondering, can tire pressure really cause more exhaust gas emissions? The answer is yes. Low tire pressure will cause the engine to work harder. More fuel is needed compared to when the tires have normal pressure. If more fuel is required, then more exhaust gas will be produced.
Perform Wheel Alignment
By driving the car at low speed, you can determine whether the steering wheel moves on its own or not. If it does move on its own, it means the steering position is not aligned with the wheel position. Wheel alignment is necessary. The benefits of wheel alignment, besides synchronizing the steering and wheels, also help reduce the engine load because the car is more stable and orderly.
Reduce Car Usage If Not Necessary
The last step to reduce exhaust gas emissions is to use the car only when you really need it, such as for work and other important matters. By reducing unnecessary car usage, you also save on fuel consumption. Automatically, this will reduce the exhaust gas emissions produced on the road. You can imagine if everyone only used cars when necessary, it would be a wonderful thing.
These are some ways to reduce exhaust gas emissions that you can practice. Let's work together to protect our environment, especially the air quality, by reducing exhaust gas emissions.
