How to Manage a Lost STNK Not Under Your Own Name, It's Easy!

STNK (Vehicle Registration Certificate) is one of the very important documents for motor vehicle owners as it serves as proof of vehicle ownership. Therefore, it is advisable to keep it well and not to lose it, as one of the requirements for driving is to carry the complete STNK as regulated by Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation. Losing the STNK can indeed be frustrating, but there is no need to panic for too long because it can be resolved by processing the STNK with the authorities, in this case, the Police. 

The process of handling a lost STNK is not difficult as long as you follow the established procedures. This includes processing a lost STNK that is not in your name. For those who have lost their STNK, especially those who bought used vehicles whose documents are still in the name of the previous owner, please follow the steps from the information below.

How to Handle a Lost STNK That Is Not in Your Name

If we have previously discussed how to handle a lost driver's license and a lost BPKB, there are several things you need to pay attention to when the STNK that is not in your name is lost. Here are the complete steps.

1. Complete the requirements for handling a lost STNK

The first step, you need to prepare and complete the requirements for handling a lost STNK. Here are the requirements you need to complete.

  • Create a loss report (SKTLK or BAP). This letter can be obtained at the nearest police station to your residence. The way is to make a loss report.
  • Original ID card of the previous vehicle owner if the vehicle you purchased has not been transferred to your name.
  • Original BPKB along with five photocopies. However, if the vehicle you purchased is still under credit, you can request a photocopy from the leasing party. Then, legalize the photocopy of the BPKB at the nearest police station or Samsat.
  • Attach a power of attorney from the owner of the vehicle's ID card previously accompanied by a stamp of Rp10,000. If you cannot create this power of attorney, you can make a statement letter when registering the STNK handling application at Samsat.

2. Visit the Samsat office

After you have completed all the requirements, you need to bring the documents and visit the Samsat office according to the domicile of the registered vehicle. The operational hours of Samsat usually start at 08:00 WIB until 12:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Meanwhile, on Friday, the operational hours of Samsat services start at 08:00 WIB until 11:00 WIB.

3. Visit the vehicle physical check location

The next step, you need to visit the vehicle physical check location. Follow the checking procedure until you receive a letter or proof of having conducted a physical check, as well as the vehicle's chassis number and engine number. This proof needs to be photocopied as one of the requirements for processing.

4. Conduct a block check

The next step, you need to know the status of your vehicle whether it has been blocked or not. Usually, vehicles with many tax arrears will be blocked. If the vehicle you purchased has outstanding tax that has not been paid, you must settle the arrears.

5. Visit the BBN II counter

Next, visit the BBN II counter for the application for a new STNK. Don't forget to submit all the documents required for handling the lost STNK, along with the proof of vehicle physical check.

6. Make the payment

If the status of the vehicle you purchased has tax arrears, then you must settle the tax arrears first. So that the process of creating a new STNK can continue. Don't forget to make the payment for the issuance of the new STNK according to the rates that have been set.

According to Government Regulation Number 76 of 2020 regarding rates and types of Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP). The cost of issuing a new STNK is charged at Rp100,000 for each issuance of a 2 or 3-wheeled motor vehicle STNK. Meanwhile, for 4-wheeled or more motor vehicles, a fee of Rp200,000 is charged.

7. Collect the newly issued STNK along with the regional tax determination letter (SKPD)

If you have completed the payment process, you just need to wait for the officer to call your name for the collection of the new STNK and SKPD. Don't forget to double-check the personal data listed on the STNK and SKPD you received. Make sure there are no errors in the spelling of names and other personal data. 

How much does it cost to handle a lost motorcycle STNK?

The cost of handling a lost STNK in 2023 is Rp 100,000 for 2 or 3-wheeled vehicles, and Rp 200,000 for 4-wheeled vehicles or more. Get complete information on procedures and other requirements related to lost STNK on the relevant official website.

Can you handle a lost STNK without the original BPKB?

Generally, several documents are required to process the replacement of a lost STNK, and one of the requirements is to attach the Motor Vehicle Ownership Book (BPKB). However, if your motor vehicle is not equipped with a BPKB, there is no need to worry. You can still process the lost STNK even without the BPKB by preparing the following requirements:

  • ID card that matches the lost STNK
  • Leasing contract documents (if the BPKB is under leasing)
  • Reproduction of BPKB with a legalization mark 
  • Letter of Statement for BPKB creation if the BPKB is lost 
  • Power of attorney if there is a representative authorized to handle the replacement of the STNK

How long does the process of handling a lost STNK take?

If the required documents are complete, the handling of a lost STNK can be completed in one day. However, if there are missing documents such as the absence of the original owner's ID card or original BPKB, the processing may take 1-2 days.
