How to Properly Adjust Car Valves
When you want to adjust the car valves, you need to pay attention to the following steps to ensure the valve settings are correct, including:
1. Start the car engine and warm it up
The first step in properly adjusting the car valves is to start your car engine. Then warm up the engine for about 10 minutes, and then turn off the engine. The purpose of this step is solely to know the valve specifications from the manufacturer's standard. Next, the engine will be adjusted to the available valve specifications.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover
The second step, you can remove the cylinder head cover after warming up and turning off the car engine. You can remove this component with the help of a wrench or a socket. When removing this component, you must be careful not to disturb the filter housing or hoses.
3. Rotate the crankshaft
The next step in adjusting the car valves is to rotate the crankshaft to position it at zero without the crankshaft pulley. To place it at the zero position, you can refer to the guide on the chain cover or engine timing cover.
4. Determine the TDC (Top Dead Center) position or compression top of cylinder 4 or 1
The fourth step, you determine the top dead center position or the compression top position of cylinder 4 or 1. To differentiate the compression top position of the cylinder, it is divided into two methods. Here are the complete methods.
By observing the valve movement
You need to observe the movement of the IN (intake valve) and EX (exhaust valve) on cylinder 1 or cylinder 4. If both valves are moving, then the valves cannot be adjusted. This condition occurs because the engine is in the position of being at the end of the exhaust stroke and at the beginning of the intake stroke. When you see the movement of both valves in cylinder 4, it means the engine is at top 1.
Checking the push rod
The second method, you can check the push rod. Usually, the presence or absence of pressure on the push rod depends on the condition of the valves. If the push rod movement is at cylinder 1, then that cylinder is also at top 1.
5. Tighten the bolts on the cylinder head
The fifth step, you can tighten the bolts on the cylinder head that were opened earlier. When tightening the bolts, you need to pay attention to several things as follows.
- The rocker arm bolts must be at a torque of 1.8 kg-m to 2.4 kg-m.
- The bolts on the cylinder head must be at a torque of 5.4 kg-m to 6.6 kg-m.
Next, you also need to tighten the rocker arm.
6. Adjust the valve clearance
The sixth step, you need to adjust the valve clearance using a feeler gauge. You can adjust valves 1-2-3-5 with a size of 0.2 mm for the IN valve and 0.3 mm for the EX valve.
7. Rotate the crankshaft pulley 360 degrees
The seventh step, rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise for 360 degrees. You need to do this to get to the top position of 4. Next, adjust the valve clearance again using the same method.
8. Analyze the results of the valve adjustment
The final step to adjust the car valves is to reassemble the components that were disassembled to their original position. Then analyze the adjustment results by starting the engine and pulling the throttle when the transmission is in neutral. If the adjustment is successful, there will be no loud noise from the engine.
