When the corona pandemic began to spread, disinfectants became one of the items that were hard to find. Their prices skyrocketed as people engaged in panic buying, leading to shortages. It is no wonder that people eventually chose to make their own disinfectant solutions to combat corona. Moreover, making disinfectant for corona is very easy.

But first, what is a disinfectant? A disinfectant is a cleaning liquid that usually contains chemicals such as alcohol, chlorine, or hydrogen peroxide. This disinfectant liquid is typically used to kill viruses or bacteria to prevent contamination by these microorganisms.

It turns out that making disinfectant for corona can be done at home using commonly available materials. Here is how to make your own disinfectant for corona with easy-to-find ingredients.

How to Make Disinfectant for Corona

When making disinfectant at home, it is very important to pay attention to the selection of materials used. This ensures that the disinfectant liquid is effective in killing viruses and bacteria.

Ingredients Needed

The ingredients for making disinfectant for corona are not difficult to find. You can easily find these ingredients at the nearest minimarket. Bleach and floor cleaners are quite easy to find in shops or minimarkets. The prices are also affordable, so you can use bleach and floor cleaner as one of the main components for making disinfectant.

After having the main ingredients for making disinfectant, other materials that need to be prepared include a glass bottle for mixing the ingredients, a spray bottle for the disinfectant liquid, disposable gloves, a cloth mask or disposable mask, and a measuring cup.

Ingredient Ratios

The method of making disinfectant for corona must be done carefully. This is because the bleach used can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin. Make sure to wear gloves and a mask when mixing the ingredients to avoid any unwanted incidents.

The ratio of ingredients in making disinfectant for corona using bleach varies widely. This depends on the brand and the active ingredient content in the bleach. Ensure that when making your own disinfectant solution, it is neither too diluted nor too concentrated. A solution that is too concentrated can damage objects, while a solution that is too diluted is ineffective in killing viruses or bacteria.

Here is the comparison of ingredients and water based on the product brand used.

Bayclin Bleach

In the Bayclin bleach product, the chemical ingredient used is sodium hypochlorite with a concentration of 5.25%. Therefore, the method of making disinfectant for corona with the Bayclin brand is to mix 20 ml of Bayclin with one liter of water.

Clorox Disinfecting Bleach

Similar to Bayclin, the Clorox brand also uses sodium hypochlorite as a chemical ingredient. However, the concentration is higher at 7.4%. The method of making disinfectant with this brand is to mix 10 ml of Clorox with one liter of water.

Proclin Bleach

With the same ingredient and concentration of sodium hypochlorite at 5.25%, the method of making disinfectant with Proclin is to mix 20 ml of bleach with 1 liter of water.

Dettol Citrus Floor Cleaner

The Dettol floor cleaner uses the active ingredient Benzalkonium chloride with a concentration of 1.1856%. This chemical content is relatively low compared to bleach. Therefore, the method of making disinfectant with Dettol is to mix 45 ml of Dettol with one liter of water.

SOS Floor Cleaner

Although it uses the same active ingredient, Benzalkonium chloride, the active ingredient concentration in SOS floor cleaner is only 1%. You can mix 50 ml of SOS floor cleaner with one liter of water if using this brand.

SO Klin Bleach

Using the active ingredient Sodium hypochlorite with an active ingredient concentration of 5.25%, you can mix 20 ml of SoKlin Bleach with 1 liter of water to create a ready-to-use disinfectant solution.

Wipol Lemongrass and Orange Floor Cleaner

In the Wipol Lemongrass and Orange floor cleaner, the active ingredients used are Ethoxylated alcohol 3% and Benzalkonium chloride 1.25%. The method of making disinfectant for corona with this ingredient is to mix 50 ml of Wipol Lemongrass and Orange with 1 liter of water.

How to Use Disinfectant

After the disinfectant liquid is ready, store it in a spray bottle or a regular plastic bottle. However, using a spray bottle is more convenient for quick use.

The method of using the disinfectant that has been made is very easy; simply spray it on the surface of objects and let the liquid dry on its own. However, if you want to clean small items, you can first spray the disinfectant liquid onto a cloth or tissue and then wipe the desired surface.

It is important to note that disinfectants are used to clean inanimate objects. Therefore, it is not appropriate to spray them on living beings. The effects of using disinfectants on living beings can include skin irritation and respiratory distress.

Thus, do not attempt to spray this disinfectant liquid too close to humans, as it can cause unwanted effects. Also, avoid spraying near food or drinks to prevent contamination.

Things to Consider When Making Your Own Disinfectant at Home

Making your own disinfectant is indeed not difficult. However, there are several things you should pay attention to when making disinfectant liquid at home.

Avoid Mixing Ingredients in Closed Spaces

The ingredients used to make disinfectant mostly have strong odors and can cause poisoning if inhaled in large amounts. If you are making disinfectant yourself, ensure that you do not mix the ingredients in a closed room with poor ventilation. You can mix the ingredients in a well-ventilated room or on the terrace of your house to avoid poisoning.

Use Masks and Gloves

For safety, when making your own disinfectant, it is recommended to wear gloves and a mask. If necessary, use protective eyewear. As we know, the main ingredients for making disinfectant can be quite dangerous if they come into direct contact with the body. Wearing a mask, gloves, and protective eyewear will reduce the risk of harm to the body.

Check the Expiration Date of Ingredients

When buying ingredients to make disinfectant liquid, you should pay attention to the expiration date of the selected ingredients. This is very important, as it will greatly affect the effectiveness of the disinfectant made. If the product is expired, the disinfectant will not be able to kill the viruses and bacteria present.

Do Not Mix Different Brands

The ingredients contained in each brand of bleach have different compositions. Therefore, it is not appropriate to mix different brands when making disinfectant liquid. Especially if the ingredients from those brands can cause dangerous chemical reactions. You should only choose one brand to make this disinfectant liquid.

Keep Out of Reach of Children

After knowing that disinfectant liquid has corrosive properties, keep this liquid away from children when making it. Ensure that children do not participate in making this disinfectant liquid.
