Fuel Pressure Regulator: Function, How It Works, and Setting

fungsi dan cara kerja fuel pressure regulator

In the automotive world, there is an important car component called the fuel pressure regulator (FPR). Although this component is very important, many people are still unaware of it. So what is the function of this component, how does it work, and how is it set up to be considered so important? Here is a complete review.

Function of the Fuel Pressure Regulator in Cars

Literally, FPR means fuel pressure regulator. In terms of utility, the fuel pressure regulator component has several functions as follows:

1. Fuel Regulator

As the name suggests, the fuel pressure regulator functions as a regulator of fuel pressure in the injection system or EFI (electronic fuel injection). The pressure of the FPR is influenced by the fuel injector or intake manifold. Thus, when the fuel injector increases, the pressure in the fuel rail also increases.

2. Support for Fuel Injector Performance

The FPR also has another function, which is to channel fuel to the fuel injector and into the car's system. Additionally, the FPR functions to control how much fuel is in the fuel tank. This keeps the fuel pressure consistent.

3. Maintainer of Fuel Mist Shape

In the delivery pipe, the fuel pressure is usually regulated and maintained by the FPR as needed. This will turn the fuel into a mist so that the engine does not waste fuel and is easy to start.

4. Maintainer of Fuel Stability

The next function is to maintain fuel stability; if the supply is excessive, it will be returned to the tank.

How the Fuel Pressure Regulator Works

After knowing some functions of this component, here are some ways the fuel pressure regulator component works:

1. When the Engine is Idling

The FPR has 3 important components inside it, namely a diaphragm, a valve, and a spring. To maintain fuel pressure, the FPR will use the amount of air vacuum in the intake manifold. When the engine is idling, the injector will spray a small amount of fuel into the engine.

This condition causes the fuel pressure in the delivery pipe to become high. To balance the pressure, the FPR pulls the diaphragm and opens the valve so that fuel can flow back to the tank through the return pipe. This will keep the pressure in the delivery pipe balanced.

2. When the Engine is Under Full Load

When the engine is under full load, the injector sprays more fuel. This causes the pressure in the delivery pipe to drop drastically.

To avoid a drop in pressure, the FPR spring will close the valve and push the diaphragm back to its original position. The closed valve will keep the pressure in the delivery pipe equal and stable.

3. When the Engine is Turned Off

When the engine is off, the fuel pump also automatically turns off. This causes the spring to push the diaphragm back, closing the valve and the check valve.

Thus, the FPR will maintain the fuel pressure in the delivery pipe to be balanced. This condition makes it easy for the car engine to start even after being parked for too long.

How to Set the Fuel Pressure Regulator

Here is how to properly set the FPR:

  1. Start the car first, wait until the engine temperature is normal.
  2. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel regulator.
  3. Adjust the FPR pressure until the regulator needle touches the number 43 to 45 psi (3 bar).
  4. Then reconnect the vacuum hose. In this condition, the pressure indicator needle will usually drop to 33 to 35 psi.
  5. After installation, check again. If the indicator number is still not correct, adjust it again. The standard value indicator for the FPR at idle engine condition is 35 psi (2.5 bar).

Thus is the review of the function, how it works, and how to set the fuel pressure regulator that you must know. If you want to replace the FPR, make sure to only use genuine Daihatsu parts and visit the nearest Daihatsu dealer
