Brake fluid plays an important role for your car, you know. Without this fluid, the brakes won't function properly. Imagine, your car might not be able to stop, meaning it could crash. Brake fluid serves to lubricate the disc and pad components. Both will rub against each other to stop your car. Well, brake fluid is a component that functions to dissipate heat caused by friction between the disc and the brake pad.

So, how does brake fluid actually work and what are its components? Here, you can learn more about brake fluid. Let's check it out!

Brake Fluid Composition

Generally, brake fluid contains Poly Glycol, Glycol Ether, and Additive. Poly Glycol is a liquid with a high viscosity level and serves as a lubricant. Poly Glycol can also reduce its effect on rubber. Then, Glycol Ether will control viscosity, boiling point, and rubber stability. Lastly, Additive serves to prevent corrosion and oxidation.

Classification of Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is divided into several types, namely DOT-3, DOT-4, DOT-5.1, and DOT-5. DOT is short for Department of Transportation. The higher the DOT number, the higher the boiling point of a brake fluid. Brake fluid DOT-3 is the most commonly used brake fluid. This brake fluid is easy to find in workshops at a low price. However, DOT-3 can damage paint, harm natural rubber, and can cause corrosion. Brake fluid DOT-4 is often found in older car models. This fluid is also relatively easy to obtain at a higher price than DOT-3. Nevertheless, DOT-3 still has the potential to cause corrosion because it easily absorbs water.

The characteristic that distinguishes DOT-4 from DOT-3 is the boiling point. The boiling point of this brake fluid is higher than that of DOT-3 making it suitable for use in high-temperature cars. Brake fluid DOT-5 is known as silicone brake fluid. As a base material for this brake fluid, silicone is a substance that does not absorb water. Thus, DOT-5 does not have the potential to cause rust.

This brake fluid is widely used in military vehicles. Its drawback is that DOT-5 has poor lubricating properties. Additionally, this brake fluid is quite expensive and hard to find in regular workshops. Brake fluid DOT-5.1 is the newest type. This brake fluid has a high boiling point and better quality compared to other types of brake fluid. However, its drawback is that DOT-5.1 has the potential to damage paint.

How Brake Fluid Works

Brakes work hydraulically. The master cylinder activates hydraulic power to stop the wheel's motion, either by pressing the drum rubber or clamping the disc. This hydraulic power requires brake fluid. The master cylinder sends mechanical energy to the piston so that heat energy from the friction of the brake fluid will be generated.

To understand brake fluid better, you need to grasp the above points well. Brake fluid has an important function for your car. Most importantly, you must choose brake fluid that matches your car's specifications. You should also regularly change the brake fluid to maintain optimal braking performance. Regular replacement can reduce the impact of corrosion and damage to the paint. Changing the brake fluid will automatically remove water and dirt from the braking system.

To help you better understand the suitable brake fluid for your beloved car, you are advised to read the vehicle's manual. Also, don't hesitate to consult with your favorite Daihatsu workshop!
