The Function of the Exhaust Valve in Cars and How It Works

Fungsi Exhaust Valve pada Mobil dan Cara Kerjanya

Knowing in advance about the function of the exhaust valve is very beneficial. This way, you can distinguish it from the functions of other valves. Here are the complete functions, along with how they work.

Function of the Exhaust Valve

As you know, car valves consist not only of the exhaust valve but also of the intake valve. Both valves are useful for controlling the flow of fluids, whether in the form of gas or liquid. However, to be more specific, the exhaust valve functions as a regulator of the remaining exhaust gases that are to be expelled from the engine's combustion chamber.

Meanwhile, the intake valve has a function that is opposite to that of the exhaust valve. That is, as a regulator of the air and fuel capacity that is to enter the engine's combustion chamber.

The exhaust valve is intentionally designed to have a smaller diameter compared to the intake valve. This design aims to make the process of expelling exhaust gases from the engine's combustion chamber easier when the piston moves.

How the Exhaust Valve Works

The operation of car valves heavily depends on the performance of the cylinder piston. When the piston moves from the top dead center (TDC) to the bottom dead center (BDC), the intake valve automatically opens. This condition indicates that the car valve is performing the suction process. In this process, fuel and air mixture will be drawn in by the intake valve and will be channeled to the combustion chamber.

Conversely, when the piston moves from the bottom dead center (BDC) towards the top dead center (TDC), the intake valve will automatically close. This condition indicates that engine compression is occurring. Thus, the piston will begin the engine combustion process. Next, the exhaust valve will open and start the process of expelling the remaining exhaust gases from the combustion chamber.

Negative Impacts If the Car Valve Has Problems

Considering the function and operation of the exhaust valve above, you should regularly check the condition of this component. If this component has problems, it can lead to negative impacts such as the following.

1. Engine oil runs out quickly

The negative impact of a problematic engine valve can cause the capacity of engine oil to run out quickly. This condition is caused by the excessive heat in the engine's combustion chamber. The excessive heat can spread to the cylinder head and valve stem, making the valve seal brittle or worn out.

This condition can cause engine oil leaks, allowing oil to enter the engine's combustion chamber. As a result, the engine combustion performance becomes less optimal.

2. Decreased compression pressure

A problematic valve can allow fuel and air mixture to enter the exhaust channel during the compression process. This condition can cause the engine's compression pressure to decrease.

3. Decreased engine performance

As explained above, a problematic engine valve can cause engine oil to enter the combustion chamber. This condition can disrupt the engine combustion process, making it less optimal. As a result, the car engine becomes prone to overheating and decreases engine performance

To ensure the function of the car's exhaust valve works well, you need to check the condition of the valve regularly. If there are any issues, promptly adjust the valve. You can perform the adjustment yourself using a wrench and ring tool, as well as a feeler gauge to set the valve gap.

If you are not familiar with it, you can take your car to a workshop or the nearest Daihatsu dealer for proper handling.
