Timing Light Function in Automotive & How to Use It
The function of the timing light in the automotive world is quite important. It can even be said to be a friend to mechanics. Why is that? Because the timing light is one of the measuring tools in the workshop. If you want to know more about the function of this tool and how to use it, you need to pay attention to the following review.
The Function of Timing Light in the Automotive World
The timing light is a measuring tool used to assist in perfecting the spark generated by the spark plug. The timing light will make it easier for you to find the correct spark position of the spark plug. This way, the engine combustion can run well.
This tool will light up and emit a stroboscopic light when there is a high voltage electrical stimulus from the spark plug wire. This indicates that the spark plug ignition process is occurring. It is important to remember that the timing light is only used for cars with a conventional ignition system. For newer model cars, this tool is no longer used because cars now use an ECU system.
How to Use a Timing Light
After you know the main function of the timing light, you need to know how to use the timing light correctly. Here are the complete steps.
- Prepare your car for repair. Don't forget to turn off the car engine first if the engine is running. Wait until the car engine cools down.
- Next, open the magnet or rotor cover.
- Then you can open the platinum cover.
- Next, prepare the timing light and connect the cables attached to the timing light. Here’s how to properly connect the timing light cables.
-
- Connect the red timing light cable to the positive terminal of the battery.
- Connect the large black timing light cable to the spark plug wire.
- Connect the small black timing light cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
- Don't forget to start the car engine until it reaches the car's operating temperature.
- Start the engine in idle condition, ensuring the RPM reaches 750 to 800. This is necessary for accurate measurement.
- Then, remove the hose attached to the vacuum advancer of the distributor for more precise measurement.
- Next, press the button on the timing light to turn it on. Then shine it on the crankshaft pulley. Pay close attention to this part so you can know the spark plug ignition timing. Make sure that when shining, the strobe light is at the number 0.
- Adjust the distributor if the value of the strobe light is less than or exceeds the number 0.
- Once everything is correct, immediately install the bolt and tighten it.
- And the last step, reconnect the hose and tidy up the tools you used.
These are some easy steps you can follow when using a timing light. How easy and simple, right?
As is known, the success of the engine in achieving maximum performance is influenced by the spark plug ignition process. If there are problems with the ignition process, the car will become less powerful. Additionally, other issues will arise such as increased exhaust emissions, and the car's fuel consumption will become more wasteful.
