Function of Radiator Cap and How It Works

fungsi tutup radiator dan cara kerjanya

In motorized machines, including vehicles you own, you are certainly familiar with the radiator system within them.

Where you may not have suspected that the radiator cap has a very important role.

Not only useful as a cover for the filling hole, here are the functions of the radiator cap and how it works that you must know.

Function of the Radiator Cap

The first function of the radiator cap is certainly known to you, which is to cover the hole for filling coolant in the engine cooling system.

However, it turns out that this cap has a much more special function than that. In cars, the radiator cap serves to maintain the ideal pressure within the radiator system.

This cap plays a role in keeping the engine cooling system at normal pressure, which is appropriate for the needs of the car engine.

For example, 0.9, 1.1, and 1.2, where these numbers indicate the pressure valve limits that can be adjusted by the radiator cap. From this, you can understand the function of the radiator cap and how it works.

In the cooling system, the heat generated from the engine combustion process will be absorbed by the coolant.

Thus, the coolant will gradually become hot, and can even evaporate and boil. If left unchecked, eventually the radiator water will run out and will no longer be able to absorb heat from the combustion process.

This is where the radiator cap plays its role; this component will balance the pressure within the cooling system. Thus, the water in the radiator will not easily boil.

Even if the water temperature reaches 100 degrees Celsius, it will not boil or increase in temperature.

How the Radiator Cap Works

The function of the radiator cap and how it works is certainly closely related to the radiator water. In simple terms, its operation is to suck water to maintain ideal pressure or release excess heat.

When the pressure is very high, the radiator cap will work. That is when the temperature exceeds the threshold on the pressure valve, which is indicated on the cap.

Then this component will open its valve, releasing the pressure into the reservoir tank of the radiator. However, if the pressure inside the radiator is still low, this cap will open the vacuum valve.

This is done to allow the suction of water from the reservoir tank of the radiator. Thus, the pressure in the engine cooling system will increase, keeping it at an ideal level.

Specifically, in the reservoir tank at the end of the overflow tube, this component will store water that has been expelled from the radiator due to thermal expansion.

The reservoir tank will also channel back the stored coolant into the engine cooling system when the pressure inside is lower or becomes negative.

This way, the amount of coolant in the radiator will always remain the same, keeping the pressure normal. That is a brief overview of the function of the radiator cap and how it works.

Looking at the functions of the radiator cap, which turns out to be not as simple as it seems.

It is advisable to take good and proper care of this component. One form of maintenance for the radiator cap, for example, is to avoid opening it carelessly when the car engine is hot.
