The drive pinion is a part of the car differential components, which has a quite important function. So what is the actual function of this component? For more details, please pay attention to the following review. 

Function of Drive Pinion

There are two drive pinions in the car differential, namely the drive pinion shaft and the drive pinion gear. The drive pinion shaft component serves as a connector for the rotation of the differential gear with the propeller shaft.

You can find this component in the area of the drive pinion gear because this component acts like a gear shaft. Meanwhile, the drive pinion gear itself functions as the driving wheel that distributes energy from the propeller shaft, which will later be channeled to the differential. This component has a distinctive shape, resembling a pineapple.

Components of the Car Differential 

In addition to the drive pinion shaft and drive pinion gear, there are other components in the car differential. These components will help the car differential differentiate the rotation of the left and right wheel shafts, transmit engine rotational power to drive the axle shaft, change the steering direction of the car up to 90 degrees, and increase torque or rotational power. Here are other car differential components that you need to know.

1. Spider gear

This component functions to allow the car to lean to the inside when turning.

2. Ring gear

This component functions to receive the rotation provided by the drive pinion gear. This component has a shape similar to a large ring. 

3. Spider gear shaft

This component facilitates the movement of the spider gear.

4. Differential case or differential carrier

This component is very large in size, allowing it to house the car differential components. Car mechanics often refer to it as the house of the differential components.

5. Axle shaft bearing

This component serves as the base for the movement of the side gear component.

6. Side gear

This component functions as the receiver of the rotational manipulation from the spider gear.

7. Adjuster nut

This component serves as a controller for the gap in the final gear, and this component is shaped like a nut.

8. Bearing cap

This component is located around the side gear and functions as a holder for the axle bearing component on the wheel.

9. Axle shaft housing

This component serves as the main cover for the axle and differential system. 

10. Axle shaft housing cap

This component serves as the cover for the axle shaft housing and facilitates the process of oil exiting the differential.

11. Differential oil tube

This component serves as the main hole or door when filling the differential oil.

12. Universal joint flange

This component serves as a damper when the angle of rotation is changed by the energy provided by the propeller shaft.

13. Gasket

The gasket component serves as a leak prevention for differential oil at every joint when pressure occurs.

How Drive Pinion and Other Components Work in Car Differential

Here’s how the drive pinion and other differential components work when the car is moving.

1. When the car is turning

When the car turns, the inside of the wheel will be held back by the change in the direction of the front wheel's rotation. This condition will weigh down the rotation of the side gear located on the left wheel of the car.

As a result, the rotation of the pinion gear also becomes heavier. Meanwhile, the rotation of the side gear located on the right wheel of the car rotates faster, causing both wheels to rotate in opposite directions.

2. When the car is moving straight

When the car is moving straight, the drive pinion will receive a significant amount of rotational power from the differential. This power will then be transmitted to the ring gear, causing the rpm of this component to decrease compared to the rpm of the pinion gear. Subsequently, this power is transmitted to the differential case. Eventually, this power will be returned to the side gear and pinion gear so that the load on the left and right wheels will be equal.
