In a car engine, there is a component called the battery. It is the electrical part that supplies electrical power to all other components in the car engine. Maintenance must be done regularly to keep the battery healthy. Charging or electrifying is one of the maintenance methods.

But what is the proper charging limit for the battery? Without paying attention to the battery charging limit, it will be difficult to restore a healthy car battery that can support the car's performance. Below we have prepared a review regarding these limits, so pay close attention!

What is the Proper Charging Limit for Car Batteries?

Charging the battery or electrifying to maintain the battery's health is very important. Usually, the time limit that requires the battery to be charged is during a maximum of 2 weeks when the car is rarely used.

The function of this charging is to avoid the battery from dropping or soaking and to ensure it circulates well to supply electrical current to other car components.

In addition to the time limit of rare use, you should also charge the car battery if it has reached the usage limit, which is after two years. Car battery charging has two types of limits, namely slow charging and fast charging. But what is the proper charging limit to be done? Here is the review!

Slow Battery Charging

Slow battery charging is charging done with a small electric current, which is why the process takes a long time. Usually, it takes overnight to do this. The purpose of slow charging is to avoid overheating with a maximum current of 10%.

The time limit for completion varies, depending on the capacity of the electric current in the battery. You can measure it with the following formula!

The first step is to calculate the charging current multiplied by the battery capacity. For example, if you have a capacity of 12 Volts and 40 AH, you calculate it as 40 x 10% and get a result of 4 Amperes.

Then from that result, input it into the formula (battery capacity/charging current) + (20% x battery capacity / charging current). This results in (40AH/4AH) + (20% x 10) yielding 10 + 2 = 12 hours of charging time.

So, for a car with a battery capacity of 12 Volts and 40 AH, it needs 12 hours of charging with a current of 10%.

Fast Battery Charging

For this type of battery charging, a power of up to 40% is required. This method is usually used by official workshops. The way to calculate the limit is as follows!

First, you need to calculate the charging amount using the battery capacity formula. For example, with 12 Volts and 40 AH, it is calculated as 40 x 40% and results in 16 Amperes.

Next, calculate using the same formula as before, which is (battery capacity / charging current) + (20% x battery capacity / charging current) = (40 AH/16 AH) + (20% x 2.5) = 2.5 + 0.5, resulting in 3 hours of charging time.
