Description
Ijen Crater is one of the tourist attractions that is part of the Ijen Nature Tourism Reserve. This tourist area covers 2,560 hectares and has a shape similar to a lake that contains a crater within it.
Ijen Crater itself was formed from the eruption of the Ijen volcano. In 2016, UNESCO designated Ijen Crater as one of the biosphere reserves in the world. This makes the tourist spot not only popular in Indonesia but also internationally.
Attractions of Ijen Crater
Like other tourist spots, Ijen Crater also has several attractions. There are at least three main attractions that Ijen Crater has: Blue Fire, the activities of the miners, and the view of Ijen Crater itself.
Blue Fire
The first attraction at Ijen Crater is Blue Fire. As the name suggests, Blue Fire is a blue flame that commonly appears in the midst of sulfur mining. Blue Fire can be seen in the early morning until 5 AM.
Not only for local tourists, Blue Fire is highly sought after by foreign tourists. The Blue Fire at Ijen Crater is one of only two Blue Fires in the world. The other one is in Iceland.
Activities of the Miners
In addition to being a tourist area, Ijen Crater is also a place for miners to earn a living. You can see them working around the lake to mine the sulfur found there.
The sulfur they mine will later be taken for sale. Some of the sulfur they carry will also be made into souvenirs. Besides being miners, they are also commonly tour guides for tourists who are not familiar with the route to Ijen Crater.
Panorama of Ijen Crater
The last attraction at Ijen Crater is the panorama of Ijen Crater itself. When you first arrive here, you will be greeted by a stretch of sweet potato trees with reddish leaves.
Around these trees, you will find yellowish rock walls. If you come in the morning, you will see Ijen Crater in a bluish-green color, illuminated by the morning sunlight.
Route and Entrance Fee
To get to Ijen Crater, you can use one of the two routes available. The two routes are Bondowoso and Banyuwangi.
If you want a closer route, the Banyuwangi route is the one we recommend. Whether you take the Bondowoso or Banyuwangi route, you will eventually arrive at Paltuding. Paltuding itself is the entrance that will direct you to Ijen Crater.
For transportation, you can use private vehicles such as cars and motorcycles, or public transportation in the form of minivans. If using a private vehicle, make sure to be careful, as the road to Ijen Crater tends to be slippery.
