Advantages and Disadvantages of Modified Low Cars

Kelebihan dan Kekurangan Mobil Modif Ceper, Apa Saja?

A lowered car is a car whose body height is made lower than the manufacturer's standard, generally through suspension modifications, resulting in a smaller ground clearance. The purpose of this modification is to make the car look sporty. This modification is done by lowering the suspension height so that the distance between the car body and the road surface becomes lower. In addition to changing the appearance, lowering the suspension can also affect the vehicle's handling characteristics.

If done with precise calculations, lowering a car has the potential to improve steering response and reduce body roll when cornering. However, improper suspension changes can reduce driving comfort, alter wheel geometry, and increase the risk of component damage.

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of modified lowered cars? Check out the discussion below before you decide to make modifications.

Advantages of Modified Lowered Cars

There are several reasons why car owners choose to lower their vehicle's suspension. Here are some advantages that can be gained if the modification is done correctly.

1. Sportier Car Appearance

One of the most noticeable advantages of a lowered car is its sportier appearance. The closer distance between the body and the wheels gives a low, compact, and aggressive impression.

This appearance can also be complemented by choosing aftermarket wheels that match the tire size and vehicle specifications. However, the selection of wheels and tires must still consider safety, suspension movement space, and the tire's clearance from the car body.

2. Less Body Roll When Cornering

Lowering the vehicle height can help reduce body roll when the car goes through corners. This is related to changes in the center of gravity position and suspension settings.

If the suspension components are designed and tuned correctly, the car can feel more stable when changing direction. However, the results still depend on suspension geometry, spring and shock absorber characteristics, and tire conditions.

3. Potentially Better Steering Response

Proper suspension modifications can make the vehicle's response when turning feel more precise. This characteristic is usually more noticeable when the car is driven on relatively flat road surfaces.

However, a lower car does not automatically have better handling. Excessive lowering or using incompatible components can disrupt suspension function and reduce the tires' ability to maintain contact with the road surface.

4. More Sensation of Driving

Using stiffer suspension can make the driver feel the vehicle's response and road surface conditions more through the steering and car body.

This characteristic may be favored by drivers who prioritize a more responsive driving sensation. However, a more pronounced road sensation does not mean increased comfort. On pothole or bumpy roads, shocks can be felt more inside the cabin.

5. Potential for Improved Aerodynamics

In certain vehicle configurations, lowering the body height can affect airflow under the car. This change has the potential to reduce aerodynamic drag or lift forces under certain conditions.

However, the aerodynamic benefits greatly depend on body design, the underside of the vehicle, speed, and modification settings. Therefore, a lowered car is not always more fuel-efficient or faster than a car with standard suspension.

6. Potential to Reduce Rollover Risk

A lower center of gravity can help reduce the tendency of the vehicle to roll over under certain conditions, especially during maneuvers or directional changes that cause weight shifts.

However, the risk of rollover is not solely determined by vehicle height. Suspension design, wheel track width, weight distribution, speed, and driving conditions also play a role. Therefore, lowering the suspension should not be considered a guarantee of safety.

Disadvantages of Modified Lowered Cars

Behind its attractive appearance, a lowered car also has several disadvantages. This needs to be considered, especially if the car is used as a daily vehicle.

1. Reduced Driving Comfort

Lowered cars often use stiffer springs or shock absorber settings that differ from the standard. As a result, shocks from potholes, road joints, or uneven surfaces can feel stronger in the cabin.

Additionally, lowering the suspension reduces the suspension's movement space if not accompanied by appropriate component adjustments. If the suspension frequently reaches its movement limits, impacts will feel harder, and passenger comfort can decrease.

2. Difficulties Overcoming Damaged Roads and Speed Bumps

Reduced ground clearance or the lowest distance of the vehicle to the road surface makes lowered cars more vulnerable to touching the road when passing over speed bumps, potholes, steep inclines, and uphill parking access.

This risk needs to be considered in Indonesia, especially if the car is often used to navigate uneven or damaged roads. The front bumper, undercarriage, or other components positioned low can scrape against the road surface.

3. Tires May Wear Unevenly

Lowering the suspension can alter wheel geometry, including camber and toe angles. If these changes are not corrected according to the proper specifications, tires may wear out faster or unevenly.

For example, excessively negative camber angles can cause the inner part of the tire to wear out more quickly. Therefore, wheel alignment and tire condition checks need to be performed after suspension modifications.

4. Risk of Impact on the Undercarriage

Lowered cars have less clearance between vehicle components and the road surface. As a result, the undercarriage is at a higher risk of hitting speed bumps, holes, or uneven road surfaces.

A strong impact can damage components such as the exhaust, underbody shield, oil pan on vehicles that have it in vulnerable positions, and suspension components.

The magnitude of the risk depends on vehicle height, component location, and road conditions. Therefore, suspension lowering should not be done excessively.

5. Tires at Risk of Rubbing Against the Body or Suspension Components

Using incompatible wheels and tires, combined with excessive suspension lowering, can cause tires to rub against fenders, wheel liners, or suspension components.

Rubbing can occur when the wheels are fully turned, going over bumpy roads, or when the car carries passengers and cargo. In addition to causing noise, continuous rubbing can damage both the tires and vehicle components.

To prevent this, ensure that the size of the wheels, tires, offset, and suspension settings are appropriate for the vehicle. Wheel clearance should also be checked in various steering positions and suspension movements.

6. More Difficult to Use Standard Jacks

A car that is too low can make it difficult for the owner to change a tire on the road. The space under the car frame may not be sufficient to fit a standard jack.

Therefore, owners of lowered cars need to ensure that the lifting equipment used is suitable for the vehicle and has adequate capacity. Never use a jack on an unstable surface
