Propeller Shaft Components - Understanding Its Function and How It Works

In driving a four-wheeled vehicle, there are main components used to transmit power or transfer engine rotation through the transmission to the differential.

This term is commonly known as the propeller shaft. In addition, there are many more functions of the propeller shaft in cars that you can learn about. Therefore, check out the following review.

Function of Propeller Shaft

The propeller shaft is known as one of the components that are part of the wheel drive system or drive train system. Generally, this component will be found in four-wheeled vehicles that use rear-wheel drive and 4WD.

The function of this component is to transmit the rotation from the transmission to the differential. The propeller shaft itself is made of a steel cylinder that has the ability to withstand torsional forces.

Almost every component is equipped with a balance weight on its outer part to maintain the balance of the propeller shaft. This is to ensure that when the vehicle is at high speed, excessive vibrations do not occur.

In addition, the transmission shaft has the main function of transferring engine rotation through the transmission before it is finally transmitted to the differential. This component is designed in such a way that the transfer of rotation can run smoothly.

Especially so that it is not affected by the vehicle load or the road surface while the car is in motion.

Components of Propeller Shaft

Before performing its duties properly, there are specific requirements that must be met by the function of the propeller shaft. For example, this component must be able to move freely up, down, and sideways while transmitting the rotation from the differential transmission.

Not stopping there, this component must also transmit the torsional force from the transmission to the differential smoothly. Therefore, the propeller shaft is not formed alone. There are several other parts to meet those necessary requirements.

So what are the appropriate components for the propeller shaft? Usually, this component consists of five parts including universal joint, drive shaft, flange yoke, center bearing, and sleeve yoke.

The sleeve yoke component will work as a connector between the transmission shaft and the propeller shaft that can operate through a universal joint

At the front of this component, there is a shaft that has a serrated end inside that will connect with the output of the transmission. Meanwhile, the propeller shaft that transmits the torsional force from the transmission to the differential shaft is the propeller or drive shaft

This component is shaped like an elongated tube made of iron steel with a hollow part in the middle. The end of this drive shaft is U-shaped, which can connect with the front and rear universal joints

In addition, there is also a center bearing which is generally installed in the middle between the two transmission shafts. This part serves as a connector between the two propeller shafts that can keep the shaft rotation stable and straight.

Not stopping there, the torsional load on the drive shaft will also be reduced so that vibrations can be dampened when it rotates.

How the Propeller Shaft Works

As already known, the function of the transmission shaft is to continue the rotational power from the transmission to the differential.

Its operation is also influenced by several important components within the propeller shaft to function properly, whether the vehicle is driving on a bumpy or flat road.

If the car is driving on a fairly flat surface, this does not affect the function of the propeller shaft that occurs between the differential and the transmission.

Because the transmission shaft connected to the slip yoke will rotate that component according to the direction of rotation produced by the propeller shaft

That rotation will also cause the shaft components, universal joint, and flange yoke to rotate in the same direction. Thus, all components in the transmission shaft will rotate as one unit.

However, this will adjust to the condition of the road being traversed. The rougher the road, the greater the change in distance and angle will be.

The slip yoke will shift further back from the transmission shaft, thus increasing the distance required by the propeller shaft. Meanwhile, the operation of the propeller shaft at the universal joint will provide a shift in the rotational angle through the slip yoke and flange yoke

To work well in transmitting power or transferring engine rotation through the transmission, the propeller shaft consists of five supporting components, such as universal joint, drive shaft, flange yoke, center bearing, and sleeve yoke.

Even though this happens, the transmission shaft can still transmit rotational power smoothly and well. That is some reviews regarding the function of the transmission shaft along with its working system.
