Violating traffic signs is still one of the main causes of accidents and traffic jams on the road. In fact, every sign is made to ensure the safety of drivers, passengers, and other road users. If ignored, this violation not only risks endangering oneself but can also lead to legal sanctions.

Amount of Fines for Traffic Sign Violations

According to Article 287 paragraph (1) of the LLAJ Law, the following sanctions may be imposed:

  • Maximum imprisonment: 2 months

  • Maximum fine: Rp500,000

The amount of the fine that must be paid usually adjusts according to the court's decision or the amount of electronic fines that have been set.

Types of Fines for Traffic Sign Violations

Currently, enforcement of traffic sign violations is carried out through two main methods:

1. Manual Fines

Manual fines are carried out directly by officers in the field. If proven to be in violation, the driver will:

  • Receive a ticket

  • Attend a court hearing or pay the fine through a bank

  • Retrieve confiscated documents (SIM/STNK)

2. Electronic Fines (ETLE)

In addition to manual fines, many regions now implement Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement or ETLE.

This system uses surveillance cameras to detect violations such as:

  • Running a red light

  • Violating markings or prohibition signs

  • Not wearing a seatbelt

  • Using a mobile phone while driving

If caught on camera, a confirmation letter will be sent to the vehicle owner's address.

Examples of Common Traffic Sign Violations

Some of the most common traffic sign violations encountered on the road include:

  • Running a red light

  • Driving against traffic

  • Entering special lanes (busway or bicycle)

  • Parking in prohibited areas

  • Exceeding the speed limit

  • Not following mandatory turn or straight signs

These violations are generally subject to immediate fines, whether manual or electronic.

How to Avoid Fines

To avoid sanctions for violating traffic signs, do the following:

  • Pay attention to signs and road markings before driving

  • Adhere to the specified speed limits

  • Use navigation apps to know traffic conditions

  • Always ensure to stay focused and not rush

  • Complete vehicle documents such as SIM and STNK

In addition to avoiding fines, compliance with regulations also helps create safer and more orderly traffic.
