Komponen Rem Tromol Mobil, Fungsi & Cara Kerjanya

Cars are one of the vehicles that have many components. Each car component certainly has different functions. One of them is the drum brake component.

The brake is a vital component because it is used to slow down and stop the car's speed. There are 2 types of brakes that are commonly used, namely disc brakes and drum brakes.

These two types of brakes have the same function, which is to stop the vehicle's speed. At a glance, the difference between disc and drum brakes lies only in their design.

In addition, the working systems they have are also different, because some of their components are different as well. Unfortunately, many people who own vehicles are not well acquainted with the concept of drum brakes.

What is a Drum Brake? How Does It Work?

Before discussing the main topic, the first thing to know is the definition of a drum brake and how it works.

A drum brake is a type of brake that is commonly used in two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. Generally, drum brakes in cars use hydraulic brakes, as they already use hydraulic pressure to help apply pressure to the brake lining.

The working mechanism of drum brakes in motorcycles and cars is almost similar. However, they still have different components.

One of the drum brake components is the wheel cylinder, which functions to press the brake shoes to produce the braking process. Curious about the other components? Check them out below!

Components of Drum Brakes and Their Functions

Below are the components of drum brakes and their functions, among others:

1. Backing Plate

The first component of the drum brake is the backing plate. This component has a disc shape made of thin metal. Usually, this brake is placed behind the braking system.

Basically, this component is used as a protector for other brake components. The shape of the backing plate is a circle with many holes and has many protrusions.

The main purpose of the many holes it has is to fit with the standard parts of the braking system.

2. Wheel Cylinder

The other component is the wheel cylinder. The wheel cylinder functions as a converter of fluid pressure into mechanical movement.

Generally, there are types of wheel cylinders that are commonly found or used in drum brake systems.

The cylinder with two pistons is the most popular cylinder because it is used to accompany the leading and trailing drum.

3. Brake Shoes & Linings

Next are the brake shoes and linings. Brake shoes and linings are components commonly found in drum brakes.

The brake shoe is the place where the brake lining is often placed in the drum brake system.

While the place for the brake lining in disc brake components is the brake pad. Usually, the brake shoe has a shape similar to a circle and consists of 2 pieces of shoes with a semi-circular shape.

This component is usually placed in one part of the brake. However, this component does not directly connect with the drum.

Meanwhile, the lining is the component that is placed directly on the surface of the shoe. The lining material is organic ceramic that can be replaced or changed when the lining condition is poor.

4. Brake Shoe Adjuster

One component that should not be missed is the brake shoe adjuster. The brake shoe adjuster is located at the bottom of the brake. The brake shoe adjuster has a shape like a screw that is in the adjuster.

So, what is the function of the drum brake in drum brakes? The brake shoe adjuster is an important component in the brake system. The brake shoe adjuster serves as a gap setter between the brake lining and the surface when there is movement occurring at the brake pedal.

In addition to knowing the various components of drum brakes, make sure to perform regular maintenance on all components.

If you do not know how to properly maintain car components, you can take your vehicle to an authorized Daihatsu workshop.
