Vehicles have components that are interconnected with one another. Each component has its own role and function to support the vehicle's optimal operation. One important component related to the engine is the clutch. Car clutches come in several types with different functions according to the design of the car.

Understanding Car Clutch

The clutch is a component that connects the transmission gears and the crankshaft so that the rear wheels can move. This component has the main function of changing the engine speed according to the driver's wishes. This speed affects the speed of the car while moving.

Every motor vehicle must have a clutch, although not all are the same. The use of the clutch is adjusted to the type of car that you use. Along with technological advancements, especially in the automotive world, clutches have started to be developed with various additional elements. Thus, it better supports the function of the vehicle as a means of human transportation.

Functions of Car Clutch

As an important component in a vehicle, the clutch also has other functions as follows:

  1. To lift the engine when the car is about to move, making the car's movement smoother and more fluid.
  2. To shift the car's gears smoothly when the car starts to move or is in use.
  3. To stop the car without turning off the engine, especially during traffic jams or at red lights on busy roads.
  4. To support the performance of the vehicle and engine so that it is more maximal and optimal.
  5. To enhance the vehicle's braking performance, especially during sudden or emergency braking.

Types of Car Clutch

In addition to the diverse functions of the clutch, this car component also has various types with their respective functions, namely:

1. Manual Clutch

A manual car clutch is a type of clutch that is operated by the driver manually. This allows the driver to freely operate the engine and vehicle while driving, including adjusting the vehicle's speed according to the driver's wishes.

Although it seems simpler and easier, a manual clutch requires good skills and proficiency. Because the driver must control the car manually, especially when driving on busy roads. The driver must also always be focused and careful when controlling the vehicle to avoid unwanted incidents.

However, the use of a manual clutch can reduce the speed and performance of the vehicle's engine. It can also decrease the rotational force on the crankshaft. This can lead to changes, and even the engine can stall with excessive use or an aging vehicle.

2. Automatic Clutch

Advancements in the automotive world have led to the emergence of a more sophisticated and practical clutch, namely the automatic clutch. This type of clutch works according to the rotational speed of the crankshaft. By disconnecting and connecting the crankshaft with the rear wheels. Thus, the resulting speed depends on the rotational speed of the crankshaft.

The use of this automatic clutch is usually found in automatic cars. Because it makes it easier for drivers to control the car if they have difficulty using a manual clutch. Automatic cars themselves have three gear positions: moderate speed, maximum speed, and reverse speed.

Automatic cars also have two pedals, namely the brake and accelerator. The automatic clutch operates at low speeds, the clutch disc will stretch. Subsequently, the crankshaft will rotate at a dynamic speed according to the speed of the car. The speed can change rapidly according to the driver of the car.

3. Friction Clutch

There is also a friction clutch, which is a type of clutch that works by utilizing the friction force on two clutch discs when transferring power. In this clutch, there are two parts in the friction force, namely:

a. Disc Clutch

The disc clutch is a clutch that engages with two friction surfaces shaped like discs.

b. Conical Clutch

The conical clutch is a type of friction clutch that works on two conical discs.

4. Multi-Plate Clutch

Another type of clutch that can be used is the multi-plate clutch. This clutch has a surface with many plates or more than two pieces. Usually, this type of clutch is more commonly used in manual cars. Because its working system involves friction between components in the engine.

The multi-plate clutch has more plates or components because it still operates manually. The use of this clutch is also for manual vehicles, and it is possible for the clutch to jam or not function. Thus, it has not been equipped with other additional components that are more practical.

5. Single-Plate Clutch

The single-plate clutch is a type of clutch that has only one disc. Thus, it is widely used in automatic cars with automatic clutches. Because it is simpler, the working system of the single clutch is also easier. However, its use still needs to be monitored carefully for optimal performance.

Unlike the multi-plate clutch, the single-plate clutch is more practical and effective. Because the use of this clutch complements the shortcomings of the multi-plate clutch. Thus, the single clutch is usually used for automatic cars.

6. Wet Clutch

Next is the wet clutch, which is a type of clutch that requires cooling because it often experiences friction. To keep this clutch durable and in good condition, the wet clutch requires lubricant or oil. The use of wet clutches is usually found in motorcycles.

7. Dry Clutch

The dry clutch is a type of clutch that does not require cooling like the wet clutch. This clutch does not need lubrication to avoid slipping. It is usually used in cars but still requires regular maintenance. Both wet and dry clutches can slip, but good and regular maintenance can prevent this.

Car clutches are very important to support vehicle performance. Vehicles need complete components to be driven comfortably and safely. One of them is by paying attention to the use of clutches that are suitable for the type and model of vehicle you use.
