History of Daihatsu Zebra
The history of the Daihatsu Zebra began with the arrival of the Daihatsu Hijet S38, which was marketed in 1972. The Hijet S38 was a Completely Built Up vehicle imported directly from Japan.
In 1977, Daihatsu began producing the new Daihatsu Hijet in a Semi Knock Down format. In 1979, a new model of the Daihatsu Hijet was specially designed for the Indonesian market and named Hijet 55 Wide.
Development continued until in 1986, Daihatsu refined the design of this Hijet and named it the Daihatsu Zebra. The Daihatsu Zebra in this year still used a 1,000 CC engine developed from the Hijet in 1983.
In 1990, Daihatsu began developing the Zebra with a 1,300 CC engine. Changes continued to be made until a new product was produced, namely the Daihatsu Zebra Espass with a 1,300 CC variant equipped with an aerodynamic body, sliding doors, and a steering position designed for comfort similar to a sedan. The Daihatsu Espass Zebra was marketed starting in 1995. In 1997, Daihatsu released a new variant, the Daihatsu Espass Supervan, which was already equipped with AC, a radio tape, and racing wheels.
In 2000, Daihatsu renamed this car back to Zebra. This Zebra had received improvements in the engine and body structure. The public loved the 1,300 CC variant, which was known for its fuel efficiency and power that was just right for daily activities.
In early 2003, Daihatsu released the latest Zebra type named Neo Zebra. The Neo Zebra consists of several variants, including: ZL, ZX, ZSX with engine options of 1,300 CC and 1,600 CC. In 2005, a new variant was released with a 1,500 CC engine featuring Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) technology.
