Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is a cutting-edge technology embedded in cars. Its role in vehicles is very important. Here is information related to Electronic control unit (ECU), its functions, types, and signs of damage. 

The ECU acts as the main electronic circuit. Its task is to become an actuator to replace the systems previously used in injectors, electric fans, VVT, and other components.

The ECU is a computerized system embedded in a car.  With this system in the fuel injection engine, the timing of ignition and engine speed is no longer measured mechanically. 

The core components of the injection system are now controlled by the ECU. The regulation of fuel supply to the engine is determined by the data sent to the computerized program.

As the name suggests, the ECU controls the main circuit in the car and acts as a central controller. If likened to a PC, this part is the CPU. Its mechanism works by controlling the hardware in the vehicle.

The importance of the ECU in modern car systems is such that all components can work optimally. As the center of instruction, the mechanism of the system in the car can be controlled. Its functions are:

  • As a regulator of the opening process and volume of gasoline in the injector.
  • Determining the ignition timing of the spark plugs according to engine conditions.
  • Ensuring the timing of valve openings according to engine conditions.
  • Affecting the performance of the engine cooling fan.
  • Identifying the car key.
  • Can activate the car alarm in case of disturbance.

In addition to these functions, the role of the ECU in a car is very important. Almost all activities that were previously carried out mechanically are now concentrated in the ECU.

The types or menus on the ECU are very diverse. Its role in the computerization of a vehicle makes it very important. If damage occurs in this part, the performance and efficiency of the car can decline. Here are the types of ECU:

  • ECM (Engine control module): this module specifically regulates engine performance. The processes controlled include starting, spark plug ignition, fuel injection, to cooling.
  • PCM (powertrain control module): the performance of the car's powertrain system is determined by the PCM. This module ensures that the power flow from the engine runs efficiently. Not all cars have this type of module.
  • BCM (body control module): this type regulates the electrical performance of the body such as lights, horn, wipers automatic/manual, and the car's entertainment system.
  • TCM (transmission control module): in manual cars, this module is not available. Its role is closely related to the transmission according to RPM.
  • ABS Control Module: this type of module is only found in cars with ABS brakes. Its role is very important to prevent slipping and wheel locking as well as in some security systems.
  • HVAC Control Module: its role is to control the circulation in the cabin automatically in cars with an auto AC system.
  • Airbag Control Module: as a safety module, its role is to protect the passengers' bodies in the event of an accident by inflating.

Signs of Damage

Like other parts of the car, this component can also experience damage. The main cause is the use of the car for a long time, especially if it often travels long distances. The signs are:

  • The engine is slow to respond to the starter 
  • Fuel consumption is quite high
  • The engine runs unevenly
  • The power produced by the engine decreases, not according to standards
  • Lights that are completely off or continuously on
