Latest Regulations for Pickup Trucks on the Road

The latest regulations regarding the use of pickup trucks on the road have been outlined in a circular issued by the Ministry of Transportation, namely SE. 2/AJ. 307/DRJD/2018 regarding the provisions for open and closed cargo beds on goods vehicles. The allowable cargo weight is divided into two categories, namely JBB (Permitted Gross Weight) with a maximum limit of 3,500 kilograms and JBB exceeding 3,500 kilograms.

For pickup trucks with a JBB limit of 3,500 kg, there are several regulations and requirements while on the road as follows:

1. The cargo bed of the pickup truck must have specifications that comply with the load capacity and technical requirements of the vehicle.
2. There must be a minimum distance of 10 millimeters between the cargo bed and the rear part of the pickup truck cabin.
3. On the outer area of the open rear cargo bed, the end of the rear area must not exceed 260 millimeters. The maximum width is 50 millimeters and must not exceed the width of the pickup truck cabin.
4. For pickup trucks with an open cargo bed, the railing used must not exceed 150 millimeters from the roof of the pickup truck cabin.
5. For pickup trucks with a closed cargo bed, the height limit must not exceed 4.2 meters. The width must not exceed 1.7 times the width of the pickup truck vehicle.

Meanwhile, for pickup trucks with a JBB exceeding 3,500 kg, there are several requirements as follows.

1. For pickup trucks with an open cargo bed, the maximum width of the cargo bed must not exceed 50 millimeters from the rear tires of the vehicle. Additionally, the width of the cargo bed must not exceed the width of the cabin plus 0.5 meters from either side for pickup trucks with a single rear axle.
2. For the distance regulation between the cargo bed and the rear cabin of the vehicle, it depends on the type of rear axle of the truck. For pickup trucks with a single rear axle, the minimum required distance is 150 millimeters. For pickup trucks with a double axle, the minimum required distance is 200 millimeters.
3. The outer walls of the cargo bed must not exceed the end of the rear area.

Are Pickup Trucks Allowed to Transport People? 

According to Government Regulation No. 55 of 2021 Article 5 paragraph 4, pickup trucks are not allowed to transport people. This regulation specifies pickup trucks for transporting goods.
