Manual or Automatic Car? Here's the Comparison of Service Costs!
Many people consider the service costs of manual cars to be more affordable or economical compared to automatic cars. But if we compare more deeply, it turns out that service costs are not just about the type of car transmission. There are various factors behind the service costs that every car owner needs to incur.
In general, automatic cars tend to be more expensive in terms of service. This is because the system in automatic cars is more complex as it involves electronic components, hydraulics, and interconnected computer settings. Meanwhile, manual transmission cars operate with a simpler mechanical system that is easier to repair.
That is why there is a difference in service costs between manual and automatic cars. Let's take a look at the comparison of service costs for manual vs automatic cars, as well as the factors that differentiate them.
1. Complexity of the Transmission System
Automatic or matic transmission cars have their own shifting system. Inside, there are components like torque converter, valve body, and Transmission Control Unit (TCU) that manage smooth gear shifting. If any one of these components has a problem, the repair costs can drain your finances.
On the other hand, the transmission in manual cars is indeed simpler. The manual transmission components consist only of the clutch, gear lever, and synchronization gears. Compared to the transmission in automatic cars, the transmission components in manual cars are easier to access and repair.
2. Oil Prices
One of the biggest costs when servicing a car lies in the transmission oil. Automatic cars require Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) which is much more expensive than the oil in manual cars. The price of the oil can range from Rp70,000 to Rp400,000. Meanwhile, the price of oil for manual cars is sold at around Rp37,000 - Rp250,000 per liter.
Considering that automatic transmission oil is very sensitive to quality, being late to change it even slightly can lead to serious damage to the hydraulic system. If this happens, you will need to prepare a larger budget for repairs.
3. Component Prices and Availability
Another difference in the comparison of service costs between automatic and manual cars lies in the prices of components or spare parts. Some spare parts in automatic cars are more expensive. For example, the valve body in Toyota's CVT transmission can reach Rp10–15 million, while a manual clutch set is only around Rp2–3 million.
In addition, electronic components such as solenoids, speed sensors, or TCU are usually only available at authorized workshops. Meanwhile, spare parts for manual cars are generally easier to obtain and more affordable.
4. Additional Costs: Electronic Diagnosis & Software Update
Modern automatic cars have computer-based systems. Every time a car is serviced, technicians will perform an OBD-II scan to read transmission data and sometimes need to update the software in the car.
The additional service costs for automatic cars are set at around Rp300,000–Rp800,000 per visit. Meanwhile, manual cars do not require these additional aspects, making the costs more affordable.
