In fact, these are different things. So what are the differences between lanes and roadways in detail? For more details, please pay attention to the following review.
Differences Between Lane and Roadway
There are several things that differentiate lanes and roadways. The differences are as follows.
1. In terms of meaning
The first difference can be seen in terms of meaning. Quoted from the Regulation of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia No. 5 of 2023 regarding Technical Requirements for Roads and Technical Planning of Roads, lanes and roadways have differences in terms of meaning as follows.
- Roadway: a part of the road that is utilized for vehicle traffic.
- Lane: a part of the roadway that extends or a series of several rows. Whether with road markings or without road markings, which is wide enough for one vehicle to pass.
Example:
The Surabaya-Gempol Toll Road has two roadways, namely the Surabaya-Gempol roadway which has two lanes, namely the lane from Surabaya to Gempol, Pasuruan, and vice versa. Each toll lane is divided into three lanes, namely the overtaking lane, fast lane, and slow lane.
2. In terms of function
The second difference can be seen in terms of function. The roadway serves as a road used for traffic purposes. Meanwhile, the lane has a more specific function than the roadway. According to Law No. 22 of 2009 regarding LLAJ (Traffic and Road Transportation), the lane serves as a determinant of vehicle speed on the road. According to its function, lanes are divided into two types as follows.
- Right lane: used for vehicles traveling at high speed, vehicles that want to change direction, vehicles that will turn right, vehicles that will overtake other vehicles.
- Left lane: used for vehicles such as (cargo trucks, motorcycles, or other vehicles) that travel at low or moderate speeds.
