Who still ignores the importance of seat belts for safety while driving? Hopefully, you are not one of them, my friend. Seat belts are specially designed to save you in the event of an accident or unexpected incident. By using a seat belt, the risk of accidents will be significantly reduced.

The Importance of Seat Belts

Sadly, the use of seat belts in Indonesia is still limited to saving drivers from police fines. Seat belts are only worn when seeing police ahead on the road. This condition is referred to as human error.

According to a study from 1998-2008, 91% of accidents are caused by human factors, 5% by vehicle factors, 3% by road factors, and 1% by environmental factors. The human factor as the largest cause of accidents refers to the low awareness of drivers in obeying traffic regulations to use seat belts.

Why do many people refuse to wear seat belts? Many people believe that wearing a seat belt will restrict their movement while in the car. In fact, this suggestion will disappear once they get used to it.

Types of Seat Belts

Based on their type, seat belts can be divided into four types. First, the lap belt. This belt only crosses over the lap. The lap belt is found in the middle and rear rows of your car.

Second, the two-point seat belt. The two-point seat belt uses a restraint system consisting of a lap belt and a belt that crosses over the shoulder (sash).

In addition to these two types, there are also three-point and four-point seat belts. The three-point seat belt uses a safety system similar to the lap belt and sash, but forms a network that will restrain the body in a collision to the chest, shoulder, and groin.

The four-point seat belt uses a restraint system with four points. This system is considered very advanced and highly effective in reducing the risk of death in the event of an accident.

In the event of an accident, passengers wearing seat belts will remain in their seats. Seat belts can reduce the risk of contact with the interior of the car and distribute the impact pressure from the accident.

Passengers who do not wear seat belts will move as fast as the vehicle's speed before the impact occurs. Generally, they will move forward, but can also move in other directions or even be thrown out.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts save more than 13,000 lives in one year. Indirectly, this shows that negligence in using seat belts can have fatal consequences for drivers and passengers in the car.

In fact, there are many ways to minimize negligence. One of them is to get used to wearing seat belts. Remind those close to you to wear seat belts. If necessary, put up reminder signs in your car to always remember to use seat belts when driving.

Not only passengers in the front seats of the car need to wear seat belts, but those in the back seats are also important. Because accidents can happen from any direction.

Even if you are careful while driving, the risk of accidents can occur unexpectedly. Therefore, avoid the negative impacts of accidents by ensuring that you and everyone in the car are wearing seat belts, no matter how short the journey.
