For car owners, especially those with manual transmissions, the important component known as the clutch is certainly well-known. Serving as the link between the crankshaft and the car's transmission gears, the clutch indeed plays a very important role for four-wheeled vehicles. So how does a car clutch actually work? Here’s the explanation.

1. When the Clutch Pedal is Pressed

It can be said that the clutch is a car component that is often utilized to connect the rotation between two shafts, namely the crankshaft and the transmission input shaft.

In addition, this can also be referred to as the clutch, which has the function of transmitting and interrupting the engine's rotation to the transmission.

Basically, the clutch works by either interrupting or connecting the power from the engine to the transmission.

When you press the clutch pedal, the rotation from the engine to the transmission will be interrupted. Thus, there is no engine rotation continued to the transmission. At this position, the release fork presses the release bearing.

The way the car clutch works here also affects the pressure on the diaphragm spring, which will then lift the pressure plate. As a result, the clutch plate is released and free from the engine's rotation.

This performance causes the power from the engine to the transmission to be interrupted. However, thanks to this pressure, your beloved vehicle will move.

This is different from the way a mechanical clutch works, where when the engine is started and the gear is engaged but the clutch handle is not pulled, the clutch will automatically continue to connect the engine's rotation to the primary shaft.

The rotation of this shaft will then be transmitted by the primary gear, causing the clutch housing and the canvas in your vehicle to rotate as well.

When you start the engine, then engage the gear and pull the clutch handle, the clutch cable will pull the lever and push the spring cover. The next way the mechanical clutch works is that the base plate can move back and the clutch canvas clamping plate will automatically stretch. The engine's rotation only reaches the clutch canvas.

If you shift gears in your beloved vehicle, what will happen is that the gear pedal receives pressure and the clutch handle will automatically rotate the lifter.

This will cause the bullet position to have a ball retainer, and the lifter is pushed and pushes the clutch outward.

2. When the Clutch Pedal is Not Pressed

The situation as described earlier will be the opposite if the clutch pedal is not pressed. In this condition, the rotation from the engine to the transmission will be connected.

This causes the engine's rotation in the vehicle to be directly continued to the transmission. Where the release fork will return to its original position and there is no pressure on the diaphragm spring.

In this position, the spring on the clutch cover will be free from the pressure of the release bearing. This will cause the pressure plate in the clutch cover to press and clamp the clutch disc.

The next way the car clutch works is when the clutch disc is clamped by the pressure plate in the clutch cover, the power from the engine to the transmission will remain connected.

One can imagine if there is a four-wheeled vehicle that is not equipped with a component called the clutch. The result would be that the vehicle would not be able to move. Therefore, it can be concluded that the presence of a clutch for cars, whether mechanical or automatic, both play an important role.
