Cars are one of the vehicles that are currently needed by many people from all walks of life, especially for adults who have families and need vehicles with large capacity. Buying a car can be done out of necessity or just a desire. However, not everyone can afford to buy one due to its relatively high price.

Tips When Buying a Used Car

If you want to buy a car but your finances do not support it, then the right solution is to buy a used car. The many issues circulating about used cars breaking down quickly should be a concern so that you know the tips for buying a used car that is still of good quality.

1. Search for Information Online and Offline

The first thing you should do before buying a used car is to search for information about used cars online or offline. Nowadays, if you are lazy to go out, there are many websites that sell used cars and provide information about the details of the car such as brand, price, year, and specifications  that can be studied.

In addition to online methods, you can also learn by discussing with a mechanic or a friend who understands cars, and then reading automotive magazines as part of your research. You can take notes on important information to make it easier when viewing the car in person before buying. Having a lot of knowledge can be a starting point so that you do not make the wrong decision in choosing a quality used car.

2. Buy from the First Owner

The first owner is the person who owns the car. Buying a car from the first owner is more recommended than having to buy from a dealer, showroom, or broker. Buying a car from a showroom does offer more choices, but you cannot dig into the background information of the car. Additionally, buying a car directly from the owner can get you a lower price, as there is no third party involved in the transaction.

3. Find Out the Car's Background

Finding out the background information of the car is something you should pay attention to before deciding to buy a used car. This will be easier to do if you can meet the owner of the car, as they are the ones who know the most about the car's background, such as when it was first purchased, the farthest route it has ever taken, whether there has been an accident or not, service history, and the reason the owner is selling the car. Then you can check the car after getting answers to your questions.

4. Check the Car Body

Perform a physical check on the car after getting permission from the owner to know the actual condition of the car. There are several things to pay attention to, such as the condition of the car's paint, whether it is still smooth or has scratches, and examine every part of the car from front to back, from top to bottom, from right to left. For the top part of the car (ceiling), it should still be thick as it serves to protect the air temperature inside the car. Additionally, check the tires, whether they are starting to wear out or still in good condition.

5. Check the Car Engine

After checking the exterior of the car, you should also check the car engine. Although this step may be difficult for those who do not understand automotive, you should still do it by asking a mechanic or a knowledgeable friend. Check the inside of the hood, such as hoses, and ensure that everything is free from leaks and corrosion. Also, check the oil color by lifting the transmission dipstick, ensuring the oil is full and red or pink in color.

6. Check the Interior of the Car

Check the interior of the seats and their covers, turn on the AC to see if it is still functioning well. Then check the odometer, as the average driver typically travels between 16,000 to 24,000 km in a year. Additionally, you need to check the lights and other equipment such as the radio, TV, CD player, and parking camera sensors.

7. Take a Test Drive

You need to try driving the car you are going to buy or take a test drive to directly feel the comfort and the condition of the brakes while driving. At a speed of 50 km/h, there should be no vibrations in the brake pedal and no sounds from the brakes, ensuring that the brakes are in good condition.

8. Ask About Car Tools

After taking a test drive, you should ask about tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches that should be included in the sale of the used car. These tools are very useful in emergencies, such as when the car breaks down on the road. Sometimes, sellers also include tools without increasing the selling price. This will certainly benefit you, helping you save on expenses.

9. Inquire About Car Insurance

The next tip for buying a used car is to ask the owner to show the car's insurance card or official documents. Because the name transfer process can be done when the documents and sales letter are complete. Therefore, before making a payment, you must equip yourself with complete and legal sales documents.

10. Check the Completeness of Vehicle Documents

You must check the completeness of vehicle documents such as the vehicle registration certificate (BPKB) and the vehicle ownership document (STNK). Then check the stamp and signature of the document's validation to ensure that the document is authentic. If checking the validation page that includes a hologram, it is advisable to check it under sunlight. After all documents are checked, go to the Samsat office to confirm again.

The above are general tips; tips for buying a used car at a showroom are the same as the tips above, but do not be tempted by the cheap prices offered, as it could just be a promotion that needs to be wary of. So you must be more careful.
